  • If there’s an emoji that the world needs more than “Reversed hand with middle finger extended”, I sure don’t know what it is.

Of course, everyone with a smartphone wants to be able to tell their friends to f*ck off with a single tap, but currently you can’t. Why? Because tech companies like Apple and Google have decided it’s too crass. Apple even recently released a bunch of new emoji – but the middle finger was nowhere to be found.

Now, it appears that Microsoft is the first one with the balls to give the people what they want.

The Emojipedia blog spotted some changes to the Windows 10 emoji, and yes, “reverse hand with middle finger extended” is one there.

Not only that, but it’s available in multiple skin tones.

Microsoft’s new operating system is due out this summer. When it arrives, users will be able to flick their friends and family off via text and social media. It’s a great day.

In June of 2014 the Unicode Consortium, the group that regulates the industry standard for emoji and other types of text across multiple platforms, announced the Unicode Standard version 7.0, which consisted of 2,834 new characters – including approximately 250 new emoji.

That’s where the middle finger emoji was first debuted.

The point is, it’s out there and it’s waiting for platforms like iOS, OS X, and Android to let it happen. Good on you, Microsoft, for taking the plunge and becoming the first company to let the people truly express what they want to express.
