Microsoft launched a new version of its Encarta encyclopedia information software this week that includes a new search bar – which has been perceived as a step towards Microsoft’s anticipated competition with Google, Yahoo! and other popular search engines.

This new search bar, included with Encarta Reference Library Premium 2005, appears in the Windows task bar even when the program is not in use. This means that the program database is easily accessible even when the encyclopedia itself is closed.

Users are currently able to search the Encarta Encyclopedia using MSN Search, which was recently updated.

MSN Encarta is the best-selling encyclopedia software in the United States, according to NPD Techworld. In addition to the search bar, the latest version offers a Homework Center for students, including mathematics help, and content geared for young learners.

“Encarta Search Bar makes it faster and easier than ever for students to get focused and relevant results,” Microsoft says. Searchers are also able to use the dictionary or Thesaurus to look up words as needed.

The new MSN Encarta is available on CD and DVD at a retail value starting at $74.95US, although rebates will be available for qualified customers.
