Microsoft Blows Lid Off Flickr Competitor

When you put something on the Web, people will see it.  Microsoft may not have realized this, though – or may not have realized that bloggers and reporters would be among those people, anyway – when it advertised a position related to a previously unannounced product.

“Heard of Flickr? YouTube? How about. Mac?” the ad began.  “This role will work across the new Windows Live division with teams like Spaces, SkyDrive, Messenger and Hotmail to construct a winning strategy for Microsoft in photo and video sharing.  This role involves leading the team to design the strategy then build and implement a winning solution that will be loved by millions of customers.  This feature team is building a next-generation photo and video sharing service that will compete with flickr, smugmug and other photo web solutions today.”

Credit goes to Long Zheng for discovering the ad, which appeared on Microsoft’s own site.  Microsoft has now pulled the post, however, which strongly implies that it wasn’t meant to be tossed around in the public space.

Meh.  Too bad.  Yet the post itself signals that Microsoft has only begun to think about this Flickr-killer, so it’ll probably be quite some time before we see any other developments.  Still, it’s interesting – and somewhat amusing – to get this sneak peek of the thing “that will be loved by million of customers.”
