A New York-based animal rights group has 30 days to find a rehabilitation facility for an Arizona dog.

According to ABC 15 Arizona, Mickey the pit bull was sentenced to life in a shelter Tuesday following an outcry to save the dog from euthanasia.

A Phoenix judge declared Mickey guilty in the Feb. 20 attack of 4-year-old Kevin Vicente-who was left with a broken jaw and torn eye socket while in the care of his babysitter.

Municipal Court Judge Deborah Griffin demanded the dog be neutered, micro-chipped, and rendered dangerous so that “there would be absolutely no possibility of the animal ever doing this to someone again.”

Now the dog’s owner and the Lexus Project animal activist group is in search of a center where Mickey would have to spend the rest of his life away from society.

However, this verdict was good news for many dog lovers who have been on Mickey’s side since the story first reached major news coverage.

YouTube video petitions, candlelight vigils, a Facebook page titled “Save Mickey,” and T-Shirts dedicated to the pit pressured the court in protecting Mickey’s life.

The babysitter’s girlfriend, who initially filed a vicious-dog court petition, said that Mickey was instinctively aggressive and had killed one of her dogs before.

Animal supporters nationwide believe that only two people were accountable for the attack.

They argue that the owner-whose property displayed “Beware of Dog” signs-was responsible for Mickey’s vicious behavior and the babysitter was guilty of poor supervision.

Judge Griffin too determined that both parties were to blame for the unfortunate events that took place that day.

Kevin’s mother Floridalma Vicente told reporters through a Spanish interpreter, how disturbing it was to see people “[place] more value on an animal than on a child.”

However, donations from around the world have been sent to the Vicente family in efforts to show support for the little boy who may have to face years of reconstructive surgery.

As for Mickey, he’s currently locked away in a cage at the Maricopa County Animal Control and Care Center.

So far this year in a span of only 67 days there has been 11 dog attack fatalities. This averages out to 1 fatality every “6 DAYS”. This is nothing short of a public safety emergency. 7 of these dog attack fatalities are children aged 13 years old and younger. 4 of the dog attack fatalities are adults aged 43 years old to 80 years old. 6 killed by Pit Bull type dogs / Pit Bull mixes, 3 killed by B…ullmastiffs / Mastiff Mix, 1 killed by Shepherd Mix and Lab Mix and 1 killed by Rottweiler. If you count the 40% fighting breed bullmastiff as a pit bull type that means 9 of the 11 fatalities were caused by pit bull type dogs. Which means so far this year pit bull type dogs are responsible for 81% of the dog attack fatalities yet they only account for about 7% of the dog population……https://www.facebook.com/ProtectChildrenFromPitBulls?hc_location=timeline

People, wake up because this is what our world has come to. Thousands rallied for Micky to live and money was donated for his defense. That money could have gone to the true victim in this story. The disfigured little boy who will spend years having reconstructive surgery and suffer through the pain and PTSD he most likely suffers from. And as far as Micky goes, way to go mickey supporters. Instead of Micky being kindly humanly euthanized he’ll sit in a cage, get some of his teeth pulled, and people are likely not going to be able to find a suitable sanctuary away from other people and animals and be euthanized anyway. And if they do find one what kind of life is that for a dog anyway. Besides that’s just more money that will be spent to keep this dangerous dog alive that could go to the true victim. The suffering disfigured kid.

I agree with you Judy, the dog was on its own property, the child was not! I feel bad for the child and I’m sure the child will need a lot of prayers but the fact is, the babysitter was not doing her job! Will be praying for the recovery of this little boy but as I said, Mickey was on his own property and to me, the babysitter should be charged with the endangerment of a child for allowing the child to be alone with the dog in the first place! This dog, Mickey, should not pay for the stupidity of a human being! Yes, he should be in a sanctuary where he will live out his life but don’t put him down. Children and I’m speaking from experience because all children have that tendency when they are small to torment a dog! Just part of learning as anything else in life. Children have to be taught to be kind and caring and give an animal their space, not tormenting them. This is a very sad situation but adults are not going to be bit by this dog—if given the temperament test, I’m sure he would pass it. Any dog, as my father use to say, is capable of biting someone and yes, there are pitties and other breeds that can be dangerous because of how they were raised from a puppy up but to clump them all together and say pit bulls are all dangerous–NO–I’ve seen plenty in my life that were as sweet as pie—dogs have to be given a situation to respond to and this child did something to Mickey to make him bite–sorry, but that is my opinion and I have a right to it! I know I already said this in another post on here, but I feel I need to say it again-how old was this babysitter–she has no family here, there are qualified babysitters everywhere who could have babysat her child–yes, you might have to pay a little for it, but the fact is, no teenager, 12-13 years old should be babysitting a young child!

I have a question, how old was the babysitter? A teenager who is 12-13 years old, I don’t feel should be babysitting a child of four years old! I feel that a 16 year old is better qualified babysitting, not a 12-13 year old!
