Asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma has become one of the hottest words in search engine keyword advertising, costing as much as $90 dollars per click in some cases. Considering that most search engine ad words cost around $1 a click, mesothelioma is clearly the industry leader in price per click.

Because of a more targeted approach, web advertising has been making a substantial come back of late, with a 20% rise in ad spending ($7.2 billion) last year. Targeted ads and ad words, such as mesothelioma, have become the standard. Banner and pop-up advertising seems to be breathing their last breath.

Why has mesothelioma become the most expensive keyword? Speaking to NewYorkLawyer.com, Chris Hahn, executive director of the not-for-profit Mesothelioma Applied Research, says, “because there is nothing more valuable than one mesothelioma patient.”

With mesothelioma lawsuits averaging about a $1 million payout with 40% going to the lawyer, and with most mesothelioma cases being won by the plaintiff, it’s easy to see why the bidding for keywords has reached such a high rate.

Some lawyers estimate that 20-25% of their mesothelioma clients come from web searches and keyword advertising. This bolsters the belief that targeted Internet marketing is becoming the standard, as ads make their way onto more focused web spaces, like blogs and niche sites.

Google’s AdWords are another example of targeted marketing. In their AdWords program, your ads are served according to the content of your site. Keyword bidding, especially for mesothelioma, is becoming a very large source of revenue for search engines, although, Overture and Yahoo do not depend on big name keywords for the ad revenue.

A Yahoo spokeswoman says, “Overture has millions of keyword marketplaces and more than 100,000 advertisers, so we are not reliant on any one keyword marketplace.” The question is, can keyword advertising sustain this upswing? Being that most economical situations are cyclical, another falloff is likely.
