McDonald’s Puts Massive Ads On YouTube

McCafe promotion may set precedent

It looks like McDonald’s isn’t holding the availability of Super Size Me against YouTube.  Today, visitors to the site’s homepage are being exposed to a giant, two-part ad for the new McCafe line.

The ad is pretty effective insofar as (at least for people who don’t use ad-blocking software) it’s impossible to miss.  Also, if you click on it, the promotional site McDonald’s put on the other end features a series of short video clips that should make the YouTube crowd feel right at home.  So McDonald’s seems to have done well.

This development also represents quite a victory for YouTube.  McDonald’s is a successful and huge brand, after all, and many other companies are probably eager to imitate its advertising strategy.

It will be important for YouTube to monitor user feedback, of course; some people may not respond positively to having two-thirds of their screen taken over by stuff related to iced mochas.  And perhaps as a nod to them, the ad features a "close" option.

Still, it looks like Google’s getting a little nearer to making money off its video-sharing site.  Hat tip goes to Tameka Kee.
