Takeover talk began swirling about metasearch engine, with InfoSpace rumored as the potential bling-bearing suitor for Mamma’s heart.

Now I can't see you mama
but I know you're always there
you taunt, you tease me mama
but I never never can keep away
-- Genesis, "Mama" from their eponymous 1983 album with the Perfection pieces on the cover.*

There’s nothing quite like a 47.5 percent jump in one’s stock price to fuel takeover speculation as CNet reported. Though Montreal-based wasn’t talking, an analyst cited whispers that an acquisition could be in Mamma’s future:

William Lefkowitz, options strategist at Florida-based brokerage firm vFinance Investments said Wednesday that “ is up on rumors that InfoSpace is going to make a bid for them.”

InfoSpace and Mamma have been in bed already, with a search advertising deal that distributes Mamma’s advertisers on InfoSpace sites like Dogpile and WebCrawler, the report said. But Mamma doesn’t see what the fuss is about, and issue a statement about it: Inc. announced today that it is unaware of any undisclosed material developments with respect to its business affairs that might account for the high volume and price volatility occurring today in trading of its common shares.

The Company previously announced that on December 22, 2005, Mamma acquired Copernic Technologies Inc.

Curiouser and curiouser.

*Genesis announced on its website on December 1st, 2005, “There are no decisions by Genesis to perform anywhere whatsoever at this time. This situation will not alter in the next twelve months.”
