LSU Gymnast Impresses Sports Illustrated

By: Amanda Crum - April 9, 2014

LSU gymnast Lloimincia Hall wowed the crowd in January with her hip-hop inspired floor routine, and now that the video has hit the web it’s gone viral, and has caught the attention of Sports Illustrated blogger Nicole Conlan.

Hall helped LSU get to the NCAA Championships last weekend with her third perfect-10 score in one season and will compete in Birmingham, Alabama on April 18.

“The regional meet is always one of the most intense and competitive events every year, and I am so pleased with how we competed and performed tonight,” LSU head coach D-D Breaux said. “The crowd was into the meet from the start to the finish, and it made for a really fun and exciting atmosphere in the arena.”

SI’s Conlan called Hall’s routine the “most impressive” she’s ever seen, and the praise is similar around the web as the video makes the rounds. So far she has five perfect ten scores career-wide and 24 career floor titles, which rank third in LSU history.

OMG!!!! What a powerhouse!!!! Check out the Amazon thighs on that girl!! The skies the limit with her. Best of luck!!! Hope to see your name in lights soon!!

I am definitely not impressed. Female gymnasts should be elegant and graceful. There is nothing elegant or graceful about this gymnast, or routine. It looks like something you would see in a night club. I guess that is the difference between college and elite gymnastics. I don’t think we’d ever see a routine like this in the Olympics.

    • Bethany

I have to agree…i guess it’s ok at the college level…but definitely not olympic material.

    • aaaa

RIght right – you just don’t like it because she is not the typical looking gymnast – just be upfront about what you really mean

      • Jay Trock

AAAA PLEASE TELL US WHAT WE REALLY MEAN YOU KEEP SAYING IT. You said it on my post, you are saying on another post. Please tell us what we really mean.

        • aaaa

          is it cuz she’s black???????

          • Oldschool

aaaa, I’m glad you finally came out and said it. It’s so sad that people always have to go there. Why is EVERYTHING automatically about race? Why wasn’t your first thought that we just don’t like LSU, or we just don’t like PURPLE or that maybe we just didn’t care for the routine??? I wouldn’t like that routine if my own child did it. Let me make myself clear so you know what I really mean. LOVE THE GYMNAST, HATE THE ROUTINE.

          • Herekittiez

If you’re saying that she has to be elegant and graceful, yet she can’t be a power house. You’re kind of sort of saying, that you’re double standard. You say it’s not a race thing, yet saying a woman that isn’t graceful or elegant, isn’t a woman either? Kettle much? I am sure she’s definitely a woman, if you think all women should be like that you sir are a male shovenist pig, imo.

          • Jay Trock

Are you telling me she was graceful?? This is a floor exercise. You are judged for the full routine, not just the power moves. It is like saying a center being called a running back. Floor exercise is about balance not huge moves like in vault. I am so sick sick sick sick of the race card. Don’t compete if you do not want to be judged. No one said she was untalented or ugly. She is as graceful as miley cyrus is and Robin Thicke they are white by the way. Just encase race matters.

          • Herekittiez

Learn to read..;) I never said she was elegant and graceful, I said if you’re defining her as a person and saying she has to be elegant and graceful cause she’s a lady then you’re a silly man!!. I never EVER ONCE used the race card in my previous statements. Nice try though. I certainly would hope that you don’t treatment women like this in real life. Lol You’re a sad pathetic excuse for a man, wait you’re not a man in my book. She looks fine, and who the hell are you to judge anyways!! jerk!! smdh btw, quit twisting words /facepalm!!!

A Black gymnast won the All-Around at the 2012 London Olympics. Another Black gymnast won the 2013 World Championship. Those are the two biggest in those years.

          • Herekittiez

            Gabriel Douglas.

      • Oldschool

aaaa, I said exactly what I meant to say. I understand that this routine works at the college level because it appeals to the college kids and fans but there is a lot more to gymnastics. Elite/Olympic level routines require much more than power. This gymnast has power and is very talented, but at the elite or Olympic level the judges are looking at ALL aspects of the routine. Technique and certain ballet skills are also required. Every single movement is judged. It’s not only about tumbling.

As for your comment “you just don’t like it because she is not the typical looking gymnast”… That couldn’t be further from the truth. What is the typical looking gymnast? I’ve seen many races and body types at the Olympic level. My comment had nothing to do with her looks, it was about the routine and the fact that she lacked grace and elegance.

        • aaaa

you just racist and she’s OG

          • Oldschool

aaaa, I’m sorry you feel that way. I hope someday you will understand that many people have opinions that are not based on race.
btw… I am married to a black man and have a bi-racial child. Pretty racist, huh?

          • Njae2000

You have a black child that happens to be bi-racial. Halle Berry’s mother told her the truth…more people need to understand this.

          • Herekittiez

He’s not racist, he’s just a shovenist pig Lol

        • Herekittiez

she’s another shawn johnson only on the college level. I don’t follow college gymnastics, i only follow olympic gymnastics. That said, she’s basically another Shawn Johnson who was also built like a powerhouse. Insecure, is what you sound like cause these girls are far stronger, than your average built male. That does NOT make them NOT elegant and graceful either.

        • Herekittiez

Learn to decipher the difference between college level gymnastics and Olympic level gymnastics. Until then you have no fight Lol

    • putyouonblast

if you want elegance and grace, take up ballet. this is gymnastics dummy…a sport.

      • Oldschool

“this is gymnastics dummy”… You obviously no nothing about gymnastics if you think it doesn’t involve elegance and grace.

        • Oldschool

Before all the haters chime in… I meant “know”

        • Herekittiez

Wrong again, go check out Nastia Luikin if you want style, elegence and grace. Otherwise, you know NOTHING about gymnastics period. I bet you didn’t even know that Shayla Worley, is at the college level and used to be an Olympic hopeful, until she had a bad fall eh? So let’s discuss gymnastics dummy Lol

      • Jay Trock

Actually floor exercise is like ballet. They actually take ballet to learn moves. Nice name calling.

        • Herekittiez

And Again you’re a complete idiot in reference to this sport..:)

          • Jay Trock

            Name calling again. Good JOB!!!!

    • BatMan

This monkey is jumping for a banana.

      • Koolbee

…and you like a mindless douche sat there for two minutes and watched it!

        • BatMan

Nope as soon as I saw a monkey jumping and that annoying music i tune off.

  • Jay Trock

I guess I am the only one that wasn’t that impressed. I am not saying she was bad, and she is super strong, but she didn’t have much flow or grace. She look like an awkward teenager trying to dance between combinations. Why is the mat at the end of her combinations? Is that NCAA thing?

    • aaaa

Right – that’s why they gave her 10’s…because she had no flow or grace…right. Just say what you really mean dude..the real reason why you were not ‘impressed’…

      • Jay Trock

I will be more then happy to tell you “aaaa”. It is a floor routine, not the vault. It requires some flow like in ballet. This was just silly to watch and no precision in moves other then in her combinations she did. I repeat ” look like an awkward teenager trying to dance.” I still want to know why there was a mat in a competition. That is a crutch to use a mat. That along shouldn’t get you a 10. Why do you think she deserves a 10?

        • aaaa

You just racist and she was the best i ever seen…i bet cuz she’s black you discount her talent.

          • EBRman

He’s not “just racist” her performance was nice for collegiate level, but would be lacking at the international level. for an example of an Int’l level performance:
            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwbegq1mG2Y

          • MollyD

EBRman, if you were trying to find an example of an elite level gymnast that just happens to be African American you could have shown a video of our current reigning Olympic All Around Champion, Gabrielle Douglass. Dominique Dawes was an awesome gymnast but she hasn’t competed in years.

          • EBRman

Yes, Molly, I could have done that as well. To be honest, though, Dawes’ name came immediately to the top of my head – alliteration is a hell of a mnemonic devise isn’t it? – so that’s the one that I linked.

          • Jay Trock

You are saying I am racist? What is my last name? You are racist for ASSuming. AAA I think you need to go to more meetings to control your rage racist behavior. I think you give us a bad name by playing a race card when someone disagrees with your opinion. Good luck to you and to Ms. Hall. Go Tigers!!!!!

          • Herekittiez

So glad that you finally admit you’re a racist ASS Lol

          • korn

I’m African American and I totally disagree with you pulling the race card. On forums like this the racist comments are straight forward. Just because someone has a opinion that you disagree with doesn’t make him or her a racist.

          • whatwhat

lol stop throwing the race card around. Other then her power moves, it was weak. Yeahyeahyeah the 10’s whatever. her dancing was whack.

          • Herekittiez

Can you get on the floor and do any better? smdh

  • larryjrmarlyn

I’m impressed, but then again I’m an LSU alum! I think she’s really good.

    • Jay Trock

      GO TIGERS

  • Robin

Absolutely love the technique and the spirit of the music and choreography of the dance. She is a inspirational athlete!

  • JustSaying

She definitely has some great skills and abilities. Was it graceful? maybe not but, this is college. I’m sure if this was the Olympics she would be much more graceful and coached in such a manner. Miss Hall appeared to be having fun and truly enjoying what she was doing. The crowd seem to like it as well. Great Job Miss Hall!

  • Morgan

Bring It On yes, Olympic class gymnastics, no. Think Nadia, MaryLu…this? Sorry, the tumbling was spot on but the dance ability (Olympic gymnasts are classically trained in Ballet and other forms of dance to complement their floor ex) was lacking IMHO.

    • aaaa

is it cuz she’s black she’s not an “elite” gymnast????? i bet you want to see some weak timid blonde girl???? PPPPPPPPP-lease!!!!!!!

      • segggg

i bet you’re only saying this because she’s african american. i don’t believe that if she was blonde you would not have answered to her critics therefore doesn’t that make you the racist one?

        • aaaa

          well you would be WRONG!!!!

          • segggg

just as i just falsely accused you of being a racist, you also (previously) falsely accused others of being a racist. you don’t know their reasons for not liking the performance so ask before you accuse

          • A Gymnast

This woman is awesome. Call me a racist if you would like but she is amazingly talented. There is nothing better than seeing an athlete perform with passion. This woman is amazing and if you noticed her team support and hug her after the routine and there is nothing better than that in a individual sport. Give her credit she is great at what she does and she loves doing it. I wish her the very best and I hope she continues to put smiles on fans faces.

      • whatwhat

jesus christ….. why are you so insecure for being black?

      • MollyD

aaaa, just in case you don’t follow this sport on a regular basis, you should know that the reigning Olympic All Around Champion is a magnificent African American young lady by the name of Gabrielle Douglass. Race has nothing to do with athletic ability. College gymnastics is not at the same level as USGF gymnastics but this young woman did a fine job and I’m glad she picked some great music that inspired her.

    • Herekittiez

Best do your research first. Nadia commaneci did NOT take ballet, her friend did. She started gymnastics at age 7. Again, this is college level gymnastics and she is in no way shape or form, an Olympic hopeful for 2016. This is a different type of competition. Please, do NOT quote about one of the greatest gymnasts of all times, before doing proper research or at least know when she started out doing gymnastics. Y’all need to relax and learn the difference between the two.

  • Mario Zambrano

    It was aight. Lol.

  • Doktor Dark

Nasty. She’s bred for yard work but not gymnastics.

  • aerial fan

Amazing tumbling skills . . . but if you know anything about college gymnastics there have many many other gymnast (regardless of race) that have had much better hip-hop dancing.

  • MATTHEWS1

Just looks like a monkey to me

  • Della73

The judges who gave her a perfect score and I agree she did a great job. She is competing on the collegiate level, hence the LSU uniform. If her desire is even to go to the Olympics, I’m sure a coach will prepare her for that. So for now can we just all say good job, instead of trying to hate on the girl unless you’ve won an Olympic gold medal.

  • Peter Saletti

Talented… but isn’t it bad enough that the NBA and NFL have “gone ghetto”. NOW it gymnastics????

  • ME

Her tumbling was good, but this routine wouldn’t score well in international competition. The moves between the tumbling passes are just as important as the tumbling passes themselves. There are very specific rules and required moves that look easy but are actually very difficult – she didn’t do any of them. It’s what makes or breaks a routine. Although this routine was a crowd pleaser and fine for college athletics, it would not score well in an elite or Olympic competition.
