Lex Luthor To Be Portrayed By Joaquin Phoenix?

By: Toni Matthews-El - December 18, 2013

With the Wonder Woman casting still sinking in, it seems there’s fresh “Man of Steel II” casting news to speculate about. This time rumors are flying around in regards to iconic supervillain, Lex Luthor. Fans have already fantasy cast quite a few people, including the star of the popular Breaking Bad series, Bryan Cranston. Since Cranston stated that there was no truth to the rumors, that left many scratching their heads.

Who else in Hollywood would look good bald? We may finally have an answer in….Joaquin Phoenix?

If he’s indeed cast as Luthor, it will definitely be as controversial. However, the desire for Phoenix is understandable. The Academy Award-nominated actor is eccentric, but he’s played a variety of characters. This includes a memorable turn as the cruel and treacherous Commodus in “Gladiator”, opposite Russell Crowe. Crowe played Jor-El in the first movie, so it’s an interesting link if Phoenix winds up accepting the role.

Some are skeptical not of the casting choice, but of the role being taken at all. It’s been pointed out that Joaquin Phoenix prefers acting roles off the beaten path. He may opt for an obscure indie flick over the summer blockbuster type of film. Still, the chance to leave his mark as a distinct version of a popular villain may be too tempting to pass up.

The late Heath Ledger still earns accolades for his turn as the Joker. Marvel’s Magneto crush is getting stale and though Tom Hiddleston charms us as Loki, neither of these characters have stood the test of time in popular culture. At least not at level of infamy as the Joker or Lex Luthor. Unfortunately, the most recent portrayal of Luthor was Kevin Spacey’s forgettable version in the lackluster “Superman Returns”.

Perhaps if the casting of Luthor is on point, more audience members will turn up with optimistic expectations rather than bracing themselves for a potential train wreck.

Cranston is toooooo old for this new image of Man Of Steel to play Lex. Joaquin still fits in age difference and could surprise everyone with this role. He does have the looks like a Luther.

  • Charles Tyronnious Spongy

Howa’bout Bradley Cooper? Oh,but the real Question is who’s gonna portray Plastic-man.

  • RedSoxSuck

Joaquin Phoenix would be amazing as Lex Luthor!

  • http://www.asdf.com booby

Lex Luthor and Commodus are very similar…

  • Jonesy974

I personally don’t think Cranston would be too old. But if being slightly younger is important, then maybe Cranton’s BB co-star Dean Norris would be a solid pick. Idk how John Hamm looks bald, but I feel like he would be able to do a good portrayal as well.

fabuloss choice….did you know frodo was an Italiano

  • imright

Goodmove. He really looks the part.

  • mixmaster ragz

first off i was not even going to go see it because thats like putting nikki minaj and lady gaga on the same stage but now that you put phoenix in the mix that was the best move they made so far for this movie

    • Holly

You know that Batman and Superman work together in the Justice League, right? … and are sooooooo not like Nikki and Lady Gaga SMDH

  • Charles Tyronnious Spongy

gary oldman would be a perfect Plastic-man…did you know Frodo Baggins is 1/2 italian…FyI

  • Charles Tyronnious Spongy

Tony Anderson Would be really good as Lex Luther….I also herd thru the grape vine that Tyler Perry is involved with The Super Man of Steel in some capacity

  • Charles Tyronnious Spongy

Mike Falzone would be a wonderful choice as would Johnny Depp…even jimmy Franco would work….wutcha all thinkn’bout that

    • Andy

Have you even seen Superman? I don’t know who on earth Mike Falzone is, but Johnny Depp and James Franco are terrible choices for Lex Luthor. I don’t see that at all.

  • Leafar the Lost

Clearly, Phoniex would be a great choice, if Johnny Depp won’t take the role. Now that I think of it he would be perfect.

  • Boi

Give me a break.. This guy cannot act,, even with his eyes open!!! There are so many choices that would make this movie more enjoyable. I loved the last one. But if you put him in that movie I will not waist the electricity on dollars…..

  • Holly

NOOOOOOOOOOO! Please, No!!!! Bryan Cranston would be PERFECT… Lex is much older than Clark!

    • Anthony

My point exactly! Cranston is perfect for the role. We already know he can be sinister and would look the part bald. No problem

  • Migalouch

Joker became iconic because Heath Ledger died, I know it is sad to say because he did an incredible job, however he would have never won an Oscar if he didn’t kick the bucket since the Academy abhors comic book movies.

In regards to Joaquin, I don’t think he would be bad at all since he can play an incredible villain. Not sure what he would look like bald, however that isn’t really a sticking point for the character in my opinion.

  • Shelton

Mark Strong would be a good Lex Luther

  • Charles Tyronnious Spongy

giovanni ribbisi is offers a real shot at winning a emmy if they giv’m a chance to play the Lex Luther…..just giv’m a chance, please

    • Anthony

Oh hell no. He’s a good actor, but he’s all wrong for this role

  • Anthony

Cranston would be perfect for the role of Lex Luthor. Lex doesn’t have to be in his 30’s or 40’s to fit the dynamic of the character in the new Man of Steel film. Gene Hackman was an exceptional Lex Luthor and was a lot older than Christopher Reeve. So age shouldn’t be one of the determining factors for the role

  • Jason

I think Laurence Fishburne did a great job as Perry White, so why not stray from the norm and go for someone like a Denzel Washington? Heck what about Dwayne Johnson? I think cinema has proven that it can still hold the value of classic comic book characters while still changing things up for the big screen adaptation.

  • Brian C

Brian Cranston is no too old. Lex should be an older more distinguished person that’s a political type evil genius. that takes experience. this news and other casting news is killing me and killing this movie.
