Leavenworth Prison May Be Bradley Manning’s New Home
[ Technology]

Earlier today we brought you news that Bradley Manning, the Army private convicted of providing over 700,000 classified documents to WikiLeaks, had been sentenced to 35 years in prison. Now it appears that we know which prison he’ll be going to. Manning’s lawyer told reporters in the courtroom today that his client would be headed to Leavenworth Prison in Kansas.

The military prison, which most people know by its Hollywood reputation, is situated on the grounds of the old Fort Leavenworth. The fort was built in 1827 as a fairly typical frontier Army fort. Nearly fifty years later, in 1875, it was chosen to be the site of a military prison housing 300 inmates. In 1895 the War Department handed control of the prison over to the Department of Justice. Today the site is home to three separate prisons, all for male inmates only: a civilian prison, the United States Disciplinary Barracks, and the Midwest Joint Correctional Facility. The latter two are both U.S. military prisons. The USDB is a maximum security prison, while the MJCF is a medium security facility. It is not yet clear which of the two facilities will house Private Manning as he serves his sentence.

Both the military and civilian facilities at Leavenworth have played host to quite a few notable prisoners, both civilians and military personnel. German POWs were held there during World War 2 and Mennonite conscientious objectors where housed there during World War 1. Irish mob boss Whitey Bulger did a year at Leavenworth as part of a 9-year sentence for burglary in the ’60s. Robert Stroud, better known as the Bird Man of Alcatraz, was at Leavenworth for 30 years before being transferred to Alcatraz, and it was in his cell at Leavenworth that he began keeping and studying the birds that spawned his nickname. James Earl Ray, who assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 did a three-year stint at Leavenworth from 1955 to 1958 for forgery. NFL quarterback Michael Vick served 23 months for running a dog fighting ring before being released in 2009.

And now Bradley Manning will begin what could be a 35-year stint at the prison. What’s more, there’s a good chance that Manning will be joined soon by Nidal Hassan, who is currently standing trial for murdering 13 people and wounding 30 in a 2009 shooting spree at Fort Hood.

There is some hope for Manning, however. As noted in our report this morning, there’s a good chance that he will not serve the entirety of his 35-year sentence. He will be credited with time served plus 112 days, which accounts for nearly four of his 35 years. Additionally he will be eligible for parole in as few as eight or nine years.

The photo provided in the article is of Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.
Manning will be sent to Leavenworth Military Prison. The two prisons are located close to each other but one is a military prison and the other is a federal penitentiary. There is a difference. Military prisoners are sentenced to Leavenworth prison. Civilian criminal are not sentenced to Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, they get “promoted.” They must be indicted to be invited.

Fact check: that is not the Military Prison at Ft Leavenworth, that is the Federal Prison in Leavenworth.

Manning is being imprisoned for disclosing information about war crimes committed by the US military in our name. That info should not be secret AND the military (& others) who orchestrated these crimes should be accountable to the citizens of the US. Manning got 35 years for breaking the code of secrecy, while the people who ordered & committed these atrocities go free. Our nation is in deep ethical, as well as economic, trouble. Hope that some group in Kansas will at least send him visitors to help keep up his spirits.
For those of us still “on the outside”, let’s keep trying to reverse the loss of civil liberty & the insanity of corporate personhood, as well as encourage one another in our efforts to build community.

Hiding information about War Crimes is a crime by the way. Some people on here apparently think it is okay to commit and cover up war crimes. That somehow doing this is the “American Way.”

The American Way is to stand up for truth and protect those who are victims of war crimes.

We are becoming a police state and there are those who are just letting it happen in the name of Patriotism. The same thing happened in Germany during the pre-WWII years. The parallels are very scary.

Pure bullsh@T! No way in hell does he need to be in jail. Hell if I wouldnt have leaked the crap so the people would know.. We as americans should stand up for this guy because in reality he done it for us to know what our WHITEHOUSE and government is doing behind our backs.. Who the hell does those guys think they are.. So he goes to jail for snitching.. Dont the crooked cops all around use that same thing. They want you to snitch on someone else.. I hate the UNITED STATES and it is sad to say I was born a sorry aZZ american… That is how much I hate the people here more or ruling and money and jail… I SAY WE ALL UPRISE AS PEOPLE AND TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE AND COMPANIES…. GREED AND MONEY…. LET THAT BOY OUT OF JAIL FOR YOUR SCREW UPS..

    • John

      Michael,
Did you think before you typed that response. He shared sensitive materials that were classified for a reason and his motives withheld could have cost American Soldiers their lives. His actions bordered on treason which could have carried the death penalty. He knew what he was doing was a serious breach of security and knew there would be consequences to which he and he alone must know answer for.

American lives are being put at risk fighting a needless set of wars, that we will never win, that have no clearly defined objectives, and without an exit strategy.

The war on terror never ends. Lots of American lives will be lost for absolutely nothing. Tell me. What have we accomplished in the past 12 years of fighting? Nothing.

    • Dave

If you hate this country then leave. Go play with the idiots overseas that will attempt to employ this leaked information to do the rest of us true Americans harm. You should join this traitor in the next cell!!

      • Perspective

Stop being so afraid Dave. It is okay. There are so many high value targets in the US that are left unguarded. Literally, unguarded. It there was this huge terrorist presence we would be having attacks every day. Quite frankly we are not.

You are letting your fear control you. I am sure no one is plotting against you. Paranoia does not become you.

    • Mark

Michael, Your right he doesn’t deserve a 30 year sentence! He should have gotten a good old & made in the USA 9MM bullet from the MPS. and Michael it is a free country and your not in the service move your ass out of the country! Bet you have not voted in years!!!!!!

      • Perspective

Bravo. Spoken like a true American!!! If you don’t like what someone else, just kill them.

I hate to tell you but all politicians are the same. They go to the same schools, join the same clubs, enjoy the same benefits, invest in the same companies, and are all exceedingly wealthy. If you think one party is better than the other or that your vote actually matters — you are living in a dream world.

    • Dave

Get a clue Michael. You have no clue what you are talking about. Plus I would guess if a ‘uprising” ever would occur you would be cowering in a corner someplace to scared to do anything but worry about yourself.
You are part of the problem in this country. Stop talking the talk and make the hard choice. Be a difference maker or get the heck out. What have you done for your fellow man? What have you done for your country?
And yes I served in the Army for 5 years (91-96) and try to do more in my community (Vote, volunteer, attend board meetings).

      • Perspective

What is the hard choice Dave? What is the correct decision? To do what you did? By the way, what have you done?

If you haven’t noticed our country is falling apart. Is this because of your efforts? After all, you are part of the solution aren’t you? Apparently, that solution isn’t working. In fact, with time, history will prove that your rhetoric is part of the problem.

        • Dave

Nope not saying what I did is the only answer or the right way. Not by any means. But to sit around spouting conspiracy talk and wish for a uprising. Is that the answer? In one sentence talk about how bad our government is and the never ending wars and getting Americans killed and then in the next lets start another war to fix all of that.

What is the answer then? Change doesn’t happen overnight and it isn’t easy.

          • Perspective

I didn’t see any conspiracy talk. Personally, I don’t believe in conspiracies. I deal with facts and the facts are that this is what has happened in America in the past 12 years since 9/11:

            - we have 5% of the world’s population and 25% of the world’s prisoners our rates of incarceration are worse than that of the Soviet Union under the Gulag system (in Georgia alone 1 in ever 13 people are in jail, on probation or on parole – source Atlanta Journal and Constitution)
            - No-warrant wire taps.
            - Indefinite detention of citizens without charges.
            - Approval of rendition of prisoners and torture.
            - Stop and frisk without probable cause.
            - Search and seizure without a warrant.
            - No-knock entry.
            - Confiscation and destruction of cameras that film police acting illegally.
            - Police brutality and police shootings that go without investigation.
            - Managed news.
            - The civil-rights destroying “Patriot” Act.
            - Broad application of Section 215 of the Patriot Act.
            - FEMA camps.
            - TSA expansion beyond airports.
            - Internet entrapment cases regarding made up scenarios
            - People going to prison for crimes against fictitious people who do not even exist.
            - Major increase in all victimless crimes in the US.

All these things have happened or are happening in the United States. The very first step is to look at a situation rationally without blinders on. The America we grew up loving in the 50s-80s no longer exists.

The root cause of all of the above is the Patriot Acts. Those acts were written well before 9/11 even happened and put quickly into action after 9/11 happened. What happened after 9/11 was a power grab.

We need to repeal the acts and re-open the 9/11 investigation. We need to fund it properly and bring all the witnesses before a proper committee. We need to know the complete truth about what happened that day.

Our country is not falling apart because of terrorists or people like Manning. Terrorists will not take over this country and neither will any invading army. Period end of statement. We are falling apart from within. The good people within our government have to start going after those in government who are killing our constitution. Make no mistake we are at war and we have seen the enemy — and the enemy is us.

this idiot should have gotten more time. he put our military at risk and now uses the crazy excuse of gender issues and the boo-hoo move.maybe bubba in prison will help him identify those issues.

    • Hmm…

Our government is putting our military at risk fighting never ending wars that are needless. We have no concrete objectives and no exit strategy. You do realize the war on terror will never end don’t you and there will never be a “winner” simply because the definition of a terrorist always changes? For God sakes man, we started Al Qaeda and funded them with 3.5 billion dollars in 1979. We created the enemy we are fighting today.

So you tell all those mothers that have lost sons and all the mothers that will lose sons about the evil of Bradley Manning …. as they watch thousands of young men and women going to war for nothing.

After all, in the past 12 years …. what have we gained? Tell me. I am listening. Make no mistake about it many men and women are needlessly dying and it is not because of Bradley Manning

  • kevin

    Michael,

You raise your right hand and swear to protect and defend the constitution to enter the u.s. military. You swear allegiance to your fellow americans and soldiers/sailors too. When you handle classified material, under need to know basis only, you are responsible, legally and morally, to protect that material at all cost, regardless of your personal/political feelings…… If you breach that responsibility the consequences are severe. Everyone is made aware of the consequences for that breach. He is going exactly where he belongs and he knows it. He just thought the media would make him out to be a hero…..but the military does not usually bend by the media persuasion…..but your president will probably pardon him, so, not to worry….?

    • Hmm…

However, it is also your sworn duty to expose war crimes when they occur. You conveniently leave those sworn duties out.

I also hate to tell you there is a higher power that we all answer to. Too many people hide their sins behind words like “duty” or “I was just doing my job”. I hate to tell you but God isn’t going to care what country you are from or what job you had. It is not relevant to him at all.

Michael, Take yourself out of this country , Manning deserved a higher sentence for his crime. Michael, if you hate Americans leave now, free country.

  • Perry

The very ones sending him there should be his companions. They have done more to betray this Country than this young man could ever do.

  • Funny

Some of these comments make me laugh. There are people that believe the government should be able to do whatever they want. This kind of thinking parallels Germany in the late 20′s and early 30′s. The same people that say “if you don’t like it then leave the country” will be the same ones that are saying “how did this happen” when the united states becomes a fully functional police state. Which, by the way, is happening right now.

America is an idea. That is all it is. That we are moral and just. That even when our own commit horrible war crimes then they will be brought to justice. That the truth is more valuable than anything else because if you don’t have the truth then you are living an illusion. A distorted, terrible illusion.

Many people in America are deluding themselves. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that we have lost everything in the past 10 years. If you were alive in the 80s, you know we were accusing the Soviets of the very same things that are happening in our country today. Live in an illusion if you want, but your children and your grand children will be paying for this because things will be getting much worse in this country.

If tyranny and oppression come to this land??? Fighting a foreign enemy??? Time to come out of your cave, friend.

      • Name

It is a world famous saying. Geez.

  • The Big Picture

I hate to tell you there is a higher power that we all answer to. Too many people hide their sins behind words like “duty” or “I was just doing my job” or “Patriotism.”

God isn’t going to care what country you are from or what political party you belong to. He couldn’t care less if you are an American or an enemy of America. It is not relevant to him at all.

Too many people are confusing being American with being moral. Furthermore, I will strongly argue that God is very displeased with this country and what it is doing. If you haven’t noticed we are falling apart. It is only going to get worse.

Where is the editing? Manning is NOT going to the Leavenworth prison! He is going to the “FORT” Leavenworth prison. One is in a town belonging to the state of Kansas, the other is a military installation belonging to the Federal government. One is run by the DoJ, the other by the DoD. They have absolutely nothing to do with each other except they are located within close proximity. The picture used for this article is NOT where Manning will serve his sentence.

  • Jack Reeder

Manning is a traitor. He got off way to easy. He has shamed his country, family and himself!!! So sad they should have hung him on the spot. America may not be perfect but it’s the best thing out there by a country mile.
