Vertigo star Kim Novak made quite an impression last night at the 86th Academy Awards when she appeared on stage with Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey to present the award for Best Animated Feature.

Novak is best known for her role in the 1958 Hitchcock thriller alongside Jimmy Stewart. Over the years she has suffered major injuries from a horse riding incident and has fought and won the battle with breast cancer. But none of those incidents were cause for what viewers witnessed on Sunday evening.

The 81-year old visibly had trouble speaking and her face was unnaturally stiff, sparking jokes online about how much plastic surgery Novak has undergone.

Of course, it didn’t help that the film that won Best Animated Feature was Frozen.

However, while many chose to poke fun at the aging actress, others came to her defense.

This isn’t the first time Novak’s face has been the topic of conversation. The same buzz occurred after she appeared at the TCM Film Festival in Los Angeles last April.

“I didn’t want to do anything major,” Novak said last October, referring to the doctors suggestion to inject fat into her face to add fullness. “That was absolutely crazy when I think about it now. You spend all your time trying to get rid of fat. I love the hollow kind of cheekbone look.

“So why did I do it? I trusted somebody doing what I thought they knew how to do best. I should have known better, but what do you do? We do some stupid things in our lives.

“I mean you pay to look worse? You pay money for that?”

Over the years, the American actress has spoken of her regret about leaving Hollywood in the 1960s at the height of her fame.

“I don’t think I was ever cut out to have a Hollywood life,” Novak said. “Did I do the right thing, leaving? Did I walk out when I shouldn’t have? That’s when I get sad.”

Novak also has been very upfront about suffering from bipolar disorder.

“I’m bipolar … but there’s medicine you can take for this now,” Novak said in an interview with Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. “I was not diagnosed until much later. I go through more of the depression than the mania part.”

Novak added that she suffered from the mental illness while making Vertigo, as well as Pal Joey and Picnic.

Novak has won two Golden Globe Awards. The last movie she appeared in was the 1991 mystery film, Liebestraum.

Nowadays, Novak paints in watercolor and oil and sculpts and designs stained glass. She donates proceeds of many of her exhibition sales to mental health philanthropies.

Animated or not, I’m wondering if you, the ‘animated’ posters have any idea about what ‘you’ may look like at 81? if so, send us a headshot, so that we may make comments about you! lol…Just for fun, that is.

Kim Novak was a beautiful young woman. When any of us get to be 80 yrs. old, I suppose we’ll be a bit worn around the edges. She looks fine. Live and let live.

    • gotta

Oh puleese…she does not look fine she looks like a freak

    • STEWARDSHIP

Who thinks you have to be young to look good anyway? Ignorant people who can’t see themselves as others see them for the shallow pinheads they really are. Ms. Novak does more good for animal welfare in a week than most do in a lifetime.

    • marilyn Stanley

Poor Merle Oberon was the same way. A few others as well. Isn’t Hollywood which would dictate the behavior of the rest of us revolting?

  • Randall Ivey

“Animated” or not, she still outclassed every contemporary movie “star” there.

  • Larry Major

No respect for their elders, and that is sad!

The Grammy’s were a full blown Satanic worshiping Ritual, they do it right in front of us !

  • Nancy

Are people so mean these days that they have to make nasty jokes about someone’s appearance and the way their voice sounds??? Get a life people do something COMSTRUCTIVE ! Guess it makes insecure people feel better about themselves when they are busy making nasty remarks about others. What a shame!

  • STEWARDSHIP

You jerks should do as well at her age. ha! Besides, if you didn’t hear her name, from the way she looked, you don’t even know Goldie Hawn was on stage. THAT was the messed up job. And why do you think you don’t ever see Burt Reynolds anymore? More than a few too many jobs above the neck. Leave Ms. Novak alone. She’s a class act.

…if you can’t say something nice about a person, “””KEEPY YOUR FREAKIN MOUTH SHUT”””…some of us learned that when we grew up…

I was shocked when I saw her. I did not know who she was and it was quite disturbing to see her talking and her face not moving. I am completely against plastic surgery. What is so wrong about aging naturally? Look at Helen Mirren, she is an older woman with wrinkles, but she is BEAUTIFUL! That’s why people are making jokes…plastic surgery equals FAKE.

    • DK

Look at Betty White. Everyone knows when you get old you get wrinkles and things sag. That is life.

  • Rich Starr

Ms Novak admitted that she regretted her plastic surgery during her appearance at last year’s TCM Film Festival. She has also had a minor stroke and a serious horse riding accident. If you are ignorant of the facts, it seems indecent and cruel to lash out a woman who just wanted to get out there and reconnect with her movie fans. Now I suppose you will be making fun of her past bipolar history. Simply disgusting behavior by some people who should know better. She has the class… the tweeting fools don’t have a clue.

For me, It was a thrill to see her, I don’t care if she had a frozen face or not. She was one of the greatest stars of her time, no one looked like Kim, she stood apart from the rest. Just ignore these ignorant clods, they know not of what they speak. She looked to me to be a little nervous and camera shy. What is your favorite, Rich? Mine is The Middle of the Night with Fred March, also Bell, Book and Candle withe Jimmy Stewart.

  • SuzzieQ

What about Goldie Hawn….she looks awful also

  • Superboy 60

If one wants to make fun of someone, start with Joan Rivers.

  • Dana

People are so cruel. And it’s so easy to do so behind a computer screen. Shame on you. I think she looks wonderful for her age & is a legend that deserves some respect. She’s gone through a lot of problems with mental health & regrettable plastic surgery. Please try to remember to be kind to one another.

  • AnnetteMorganEdwards

It makes me sad what happens to people who try to keep their face looking younger then the rest of their body. Just age gracefully like life intends. I know so many women in their 80’s who are so much better off and looking then poor Kim Novak, and they’ve never had a bit of surgery.

  • Elaine

The ones who said negative statements are really being bullies!!! I think it’s terrible to pick on an 81 yr. old woman. When or if you have children good luck!!

  • chattycathy

Her eyes look great. It’s her mouth that doesn’t look right.
