Kentucky Beats Kansas: On The Court And On Twitter

  • On Monday night, the University of Kentucky Wildcats defeated the Kansas Jayhawks to clinch their 8th NCAA Tournament title. Kansas put together a nice little run at the end of the game to make it closer, but Kentucky simply dominated throughout. Superstar and future #1 NBA draft pick Anthony Davis let his presence be known with a commanding defensive performance and won the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player award.

For everyone in the city of Lexington, KY, is was amazing. The city exploded after the victory, and apparently so did Twitter. During the final three minutes of the game, 89,000 tweets poured in about the game.

Twitter went crazy as #BBN celebrated: 89,000 tweets in 3 mins at end of game. #FinalFour 13 hours ago via HootSuite ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

And according to Twitter, Kentucky “controlled the conversation on Twitter, sustaining a higher Tweets-per-minute (TPM) rate than Kansas throughout the game.” Although we know that not all of the tweets coming in about Kentucky were congratulatory, we do know that they dominated the Twitterverse throughout:

That giant peak in the graph is when the Tweets per minute hit their highest point of the night – you guessed it, when Big Blue Nation won the championship. Twitter says that the TPM peaked at just over 30,000.

Until the championship game, the most amount of March Madness-themed Twitter activity occurred after the Elite Eight games were played and Kanas and Kentucky locked in their spots in the Final Four.

More Twitter facts: just passed 1 million Tourney tweets for the day. #BBN has surpassed #KUBBall as the loudest fans. http://t.co/OcVdIfE5 15 hours ago via HootSuite ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
