Kathy Bates is normally the very picture of a strong woman; the roles she's taken on in films and on television portray women who take no guff from anyone, who take charge of any situation and meet it head-on. And I think it's safe to say that the real woman behind those characters is much the same way; she claimed a hard-won victory over ovarian cancer nine years ago and barely let it break her stride. However, as is the case with many cancer victims, she went on to find herself encumbered with another bout of the disease, this time in both breasts. And in a fearless move, the 64-year old actress underwent surgery to remove both breasts.
"After much consideration, I underwent a double mastectomy," she said. "Luckily, I don't have to undergo radiation or chemo. My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception."
Even though she just went under the knife a few weeks ago, she fully intends to show up to the Emmy Awards on September 23rd, saying she's looking forward to getting back to her old life.
"My doctors have assured me I'm going to be around for a long time," she says. "I'm looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do."
