Gabriel, 64, was diagnosed with pneumonia, and has cancelled three dates of his “Volver” tour, according to a statement issued Tuesday from tour company publicity firm D. Baron Media Relations.

Gabriel had performed a three-hour set at the Mandalay Bay resort Las Vegas Sunday night, and has so far cancelled performances scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in Los Angeles, along with a Saturday concert in San Jose, California. Tour producer CMN Events plans to have the cancelled dates rescheduled by the end of the week, and Gabriel is set to play in Los Angeles on May 1.

Gabriel, born Alberto Aguilera Valadez, is a six time Grammy nominee and has sold over 100 million records. In 1986, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley declared October 5 “The Day of Juan Gabriel,” and the singer also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Here is Juan Gabriel’s “Así Fue”:

While Gabriel has established himself as Mexico’s leading commercial singer-songwriter, delving into in many diverse styles including rancheras with mariachi, ballads, pop, rock and disco, his work as an arranger, engineer, producer and songwriter throughout his career has brought him into collaboration with leading Latin artists including Rocío Dúrcal, José José, Luis Miguel, Rocío Dúrcal and Isabel Pantoja.

The singer seems to be in good spirits, assuring his fans that things are alright:

Gabriel is expected to be released from the hospital within a few days. His “Volver” tour commenced early this month, and includes gigs in Houston, New York City and Miami. The show features Gabriel’s mariachi band, and a full orchestra on a 360-degree stage.
