Jon Jones: Wins Title Fight against Gustafsson
Jon “Bones” Jones won his title fight last night, and immediately after claiming his victory, he was transported on a stretcher to the hospital.
Jones’ title fight against Alex Gustafsson was the main event of the UFC 165 event, and man did they put on a show! Although Jones did retain his belt, it could have easily gone the other way. Judges Richard Bertrand and Doug Crosby scored the five-round fight 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46. Gustafsson became the first person to take Jones down in Jones’ history of fighting in the UFC. He put up an amazing fight and was able to go all five rounds with Jones.
UFC president, Dana White was very impressed by both fighters. “It was a great fight, and it was one of those exciting, great fights because [what happened] is what nobody expected [to happen],” he said. “Things happened that you did not expect to happen. When it does, it freaks you out and you go crazy. … This is one of those fights tonight that you remember why you’re a fight fan and why you love fights so much. When a round ends and the whole place is on its feet with a standing ovation, and they did that for all five rounds, it’s amazing. I love being a part of things like this.”
This was Jones’ 10th straight win and has given Jones a UFC light-heavyweight record of six consecutive title defenses. After the fight, Jones said: “I’ll tell you what, I’ve been asking for a dogfight for a long time. And I finally got what I was looking for. It’s a blessing in many ways. I proved a lot to myself but I’m not satisfied. I’ve got to do a lot of work in the gym to stay on top of my game.”
Gustafsson didn’t argue the judges decision. “It’s just an honor for me to fight the champ,” he said. “He’s the champ for a reason. I will learn from this and come back stronger. I’m just starting my career, and I have tons of fights to do it.”
Thank you for everyone support. I felt a little off my game tonight but I learned alot about myself and I promise to come back better.
