John Mellencamp and Meg Ryan have called it quits after three years of dating, reported Closer Weekly.

According to one of Mellencamp’s friends, the couple broke up “a couple of weeks ago.”

Since the two began dating sometime in late 2010, they have kept their relationship private, so it’s no surprise it’s been a few weeks since the two split with no word. The couple began their relationship following Mellencamp’s separation from his wife of 18 years, Elaine Irwin Mellencamp.

The Sleeping in Seattle actress and Mellencamp, 62, split their time between the East Coast and in Indiana, Mellencamp’s longtime home.

Opinions differ on why the couple broke-up.

“It was the distance,” a source told People magazine. “She lives in New York and he resides in Indiana. It was the long distance that ultimately was the cause.”

Mellencamp apparently didn’t take to the big city.

“I’m too sensitive to live there,” he told Rolling Stone in December. “I can’t see poor people. I can’t see the suffering. I can’t see the trash on the streets.” When it comes to paparazzi attention, he added, “I don’t like it for [Ryan]. “I’m not leaving Indiana. I’m going to die here.”

However, Mellencamp’s friend believed there were other, more personal reasons.

“I don’t think he loved all the attention he got just from dating an actress,” the friend told Closer Weekly. “I bet he’ll stay away from dating another famous person for a while.”

Ryan, 52, is currently directing Ithaca, an adaption of William Saroyan’s novel The Human Comedy. The last time the actress appeared before the camera was in 2009’s Serious Moonlight.

As for Mellencamp, he has a new album, Plain Spoken, slated for release next month.

I always liked John Melloncamp. He shies away from the big city and all the phoniness in Hollywood and New York. As for Meg Ryan, I never did like her, and I hope John finds another person who fits his lifestyle more. He’s always been a real nice guy helping people. I do wish he and Elaine would get back together. They made a great pair.

She said–“Hey John I need to lose some more weight and make my lips more fatter–what do you think?” John says–“I’m out of here.”

i live in bloomington and this does not surprise me and theres a lot of people here in our town knew it wouldnt work out. the real reason why elaine and john split was because he was cheating with meg. john as we know him, even from seymour, knows his womanizing way. elaine was a good wife and mother. she took good care of john and herself. john made a big mistake and he knows it. but its already going around that john is seeing someone. so meg what goes around comes around.

I didn’t know or would have ever guessed these two were hooked up, seems like two opposite personalities attracting. Yes, opposites do attract but they rarely stay together in my own personal experience.

The movie was “Sleepless In Seattle”, not “Sleeping In Seattle”. In case accuracy matters at all.
