Jennifer Nettles has a big voice, but soon she’ll be showing off her acting chops as well in the NBC movie Coat Of Many Colors, a biopic about the early life of country star Dolly Parton.

Nettles has signed on to play Parton’s mother, and Rick Schroder will play her father. The movie will reportedly focus on several events that occurred around the time Dolly was nine years old that she says molded her into the person she is today.

Fans of Dolly’s will already know that she grew up in poverty along the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, and was one of twelve children. The movie’s title comes from a song Dolly wrote about an actual coat that her mother made for her out of scraps that had been donated to the family, which led to her being teased and tormented in school. Seeing as how the film is centered around that incident, it’s likely that Jennifer Nettles will play a pretty big role.

Parton recently had the opportunity to surprise young Alyvia Lind with the news that she would be playing young Dolly in the movie, and said that when she watched Lind perform she knew she was the one.

“When you were doing your audition, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, I wish I had been that pretty when I was little. I wish I had been that smart.’ But I really felt you,” Parton said.

Dolly Parton is a busy lady of late; not only is she working on making her movie a success, she’s also building up her theme park, Dollywood. Parton announced earlier this month that the park will soon feature the world’s fastest wooden roller coaster, and it will be the biggest and most expensive attraction the park offers. Dolly said in a statement that the ride, called Lightning Rod, echoes the feeling of 1950’s hot rods.

“Lighting Rod reminds me so much of those colorful cars cruisin’ up and down Main Street in downtown Sevierville back when I was in high school. I remember all those souped-up cars; but what I remember most were those good-lookin’ boys behind the wheel with those flat-top and ducktail haircuts,” Dolly Parton said.
