Jane McGarry: News Anchor Arrested For DUI, Twitter Reacts

Longtime news anchor for NBC 5 Jane McGarry was arrested over the weekend under suspicion of driving under the influence.

The 56-year old reporter–who is a National Gracie Award winner–was pulled over in Dallas after failing to signal when she changed lanes, and when officers noted her bloodshot eyes and odd demeanor they asked her to perform several sobriety tests, which she failed. Although she refused a breathalyzer test, officials took a blood sample from her, as per their policy.

McGarry doesn’t have a prior record but her employer is looking into the matter, according to Brian Hocker, vice president of programming. Hopefully one mistake won’t be the undoing of her career.

After being released early Sunday morning on bail, McGarry has been absent from the public eye and has not acknowledged the arrest; however, her fans have taken to her Facebook page and to Twitter to give their support, which is ample.

Want to stop drunk Driving….Then close all the bars! Thats the only way its going to happen!! This is a sad story becasue you make 1 mistake and it can ruin your career our media nowdays is appauling with all this politically correct BS. Get a life. you can kill someone everyday you drive your car weather it be from drinking on dropping a hotdog in your lap. First time offenders do not deserve to be treated as they do like hardcore criminals. This comes from personal experience. Best wishes Jane!

If I had to do the sobriety tests, I would fail most of them because I have poor balance. I do not drink either. I like Jane, but I am disappointed that she chose to drive after drinking, whether she was actually legally drunk or not.

Several years ago, Jane was on jury duty and caused a panel to be quashed when, despit the Judge’s instructions, she told the other jurors that a person must be guilty or they would not be in court. Shoe is on the other foot now.

This is b.s. I’ve read most of the comments, and am wondering where most of you get your logic. 1st who cares about proper grammer, when discussing drunk driving? 2nd this is a very serious offense. 3rd in most states and for most public people, drunk driving, fatal or not, come with severe consequences. Including and not limited to loss of; family, job, finances, and freedom, to name a few. I read the article also about Carr, another anchor 25 to 39 months in manslaughter for dui. Is this some terrible joke. I am tired of celebrities getting away with everything from drugs to murder. Lock them up! But no, the legislatures and like someone else commented “this country was created by criminals and still run by criminals”. Yippy yay aye….;)

In N.D. manslaughter carries a 10 year prision sentence. Drunk drivers, who refuse any test, eye, physical, breath or blood, an automatic 4years. How do you like that. All for one and one for all.

I remember driving home drunk after a night out when I was about 19-20 (yes, way back when the legal drinking age was 18). I’d never do that now. But I’ve done it. Sounds like I’m the only one who has ever done this besides her.

George W Bush got a DUI and a bunch of people elected him…twice. So maybe it is true that “drunks are losers”. Or maybe the people who voted for him. The lady made a mistake and will pay the price dictated by the laws that our representatives have enacted on our behalf. Don’t like the penalties? Them do something about it. Or just go crawl back under your rock.

oh, come on now. this is TEXAS. people drink in texas. remember molly ivans, political columnist and humorist extraordinaire? jane wasn’t on the job; it was her own time. apart from that, i suggest that notwithstanding news and tv reporting’s stressfulness, she abstain from even sniffing the stuff from now on, and keep tums on hand at all times! go to the bathroom and do jumping jacks to relieve stress, drink milk when you get dyspepsia, and eat a lot of fish. it’s natural plavix to protect your arteries from high blood pressure. makes the platelets all slippery and unclogs the arteries in your brain and heart and chest. when i play tennis or badminton, i just imagine people as the birdie or ball. very satisfying! good luck.

My mother was killed by a drunk driver when I was just 13 years old!

ANYONE driving drunk is guilty of a CRIME!

Eating, talking to your passenger, putting on makeup are not illegal as of yet, but Drunk Driving is Illegal and for that, she must pay the price. Once due process is completed of course!

Anyone making excuses should have their loved one killed by a drunk driver and see how fast your thoughts change.

The point here is that while she didn’t kill anyone (thankfully!), she was verified to have been driving while impaired and will stand judgement for it!

I believe wholeheartedly that if you drive drunk and hurt, maim or kill someone, YOU should be put to death. It’s no different than if you broke into someones house and “accidently” killed someone in the commision of a crime.

I say wait to see the results, hoping they are accurate. I heard sobriety tests include saying the ABCs backwards. I have tried to give this task to people for publick speaking/concentration practice…and it was all but impossible. They all took out their cell phones to read the letters off the phone backwards…and they were sober. I tried it myself, sober again, and I ended up counting three letters back at a time, having to go back and forth in my mind and aloud. I had never really thought about how difficult it is. I couldn’t imagine having to do it in front of police who assume I am drunk, by the side of the road…etc etc etc. Not to mention the walking and balancing things they make people do…with my achy legs and joints. Getting out of a car and having to balance etc. would also be a challenge for me there….sober.
I don’tknow what I think about these things. Good Luck Jane M.
By the way, they say she spoke in a loud way…SHE SPEAK PUBLICALLY FOR A LIVING>.. she is going to enunicate and sound different than the average person..I have heard her off camera in a store. NOT DRUNK. Don’t rush to judgement!
I do wish the police had something they could do about all the talkers and texters who don’t concentrate on the road…I am afraid they are going to kill me. Good luck Ms. M

The police pulled her over for not giving a signal for changing lanes. Then noticed her bloodshot eyes. SHe could have only had one drink. We all know she doesn’t get much sleep from her working schedule on TV. That would make one’s eyes red. She is not a criminal like some moron suggested. She is one of the best news anchor people on the planet. One drink will get your arrested if you breath into that device the police have. but you won’t be drunk. So give her a break.

Okay, Folks. Although she was arrested and booked consider the other things that could have caused this incident.. It could be she was taking a prescribed OR over the counter medication and decided to have a glass of wine or other drink with dinner or some occasion. It may not have affected her until she began driving. PLUS, good people out there, Do you know that Diabetes can cause a person to smell AND appear intoxicated? I am Type 1 for over 50 years now and had two incidents where I failed a urine test for alcohol. Didn’t get THAT job. After contacting my doctor and the test facility I obtained a letter stating this could happen. Thankfully I did not have the breath issue at this time nor was pulled over but it CAN happen. This is reason enough for me to NOT DRINK any alcohol. Food or in this case, Drink For Thought!
    Peace Out

I read the story and I am conflicted. First of all, and it does matter, what was her BAC? Was she dangerous fall down drunk and a threat to society? Or did she simply (irresponsibly) misjudge how long and to what extent her drinks had on her. I do not think she should lose her job and I hope this does not turn into a sympathetic cry for help. I am happy no one was hurt, herself or others. I hope she learns from this and she should pay. I feel like excessive community service and loss of driving rights would be fair. She is in the public eye and with that comes a responsibility to those who she influences. I am sure her embarrassment is up there too. I am disappointed, but no reason to attack her. We all screw up,.

Yes she did do wrong and should be punished according to the law for her DUI. But why should the public judge her? So what she is some big shot reporter! We all have something to hide, there are a lot of people rich, poor, it don’t matter no one should be driving and doing anything else. If people would pay more attention to their driving then there won’t be so many accidents. I don’t drive because I have seizures, I told the D M V and the judge took my license. But I did it because I didn’t want to think about killing someone if I had one while driving. So to all of you who think not paying attention while driving and that nothing will happen, you are the person that it will happen to. So people please when you get into your car make sure that your head is clear and please by all means pay ATTENTION TO DRIVING everything else can wait. And to all of you who think that even a small amount of ALCOHOL is safe to drive it isn’t. People always say guns kill, well so do stupid people.

Well I wish the Drunk Driver that killed my son and his wife, had cut them some slack! He obviously didn’t think he was doing anything wrong either! So now I am the parent of their two children that will never get to have a life with their Mom & Dad. It is never a MISTAKE, to drive after consuming alcohol , IT IS A CRIME !!! Those of you that have never had to identify your loved ones bodies, then plan a funeral, and at a the same time, try to put the children’s lives back to normal, ( which it never is ) don’t have the right to voice your emotions, when you don’t have a clue what you are talking about. Walk a mile in our shoes, see what we see, then trust me, you will think differently!!

You know, back in the 70′s and 80′s, cops had such a better sense of humor when it came to drunk or buzzed driving…take your keys away, make you walk home or call a cab, follow you home or better yet, give you a ride home. What happened to protect and to serve? Isn’t it just as important to protect the driver from himself as it is to protect others?

Ok indignant and self-righteous….bring on the hate.

I did not see any post that mention who she was drinking with. I would like to think that we all have a friend that could drive us home. She must have at least appeared sober when she left, surely she wasn’t drinking alone. Why should she lose her job? She wasn’t drunk on the job.

The cop did the right thing no one is immune to the law. To let her go is is a violation of the law. Now, with that said. We have in the past seen Police Officers stopping other PO and arresting them if needed. Even our Gov. tried and failed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8CvXIY6mgk .So why would she be any different. These reporters see and report accidents on a daily basis, they should know better. To her defense we are all human and we all make mistakes. God Bless her and her family. Good luck to her. Remember if you drink don’t drive.

Dear Amanda, exercise caution when declaring this to be her first offense. As a commenter pointed out, a person arrested for DUI has driven under the influence an average of 87 times before getting caught! Not her first offense by a long shot.

I heard a saying once. If you see someone in Texas with their turn signals on, they probably bought it that way.

Seems very odd they pulled you over for not signaling a lane change. On any given day driving in texas most do not signal lanes, inculding police, and no, they are not involved in a pursuit.

Best wishes Jane, get that Judge to defend you that got away with refusing the breath test, and beat the blood test.

You are not her judge. You are not perfect. This was/is her first offense and hopefully her last, hopefully this was a tough lesson learned. Thankfully she DID NOT kill anyone or herself while on the road-thank the officer who stopped her. I find all of these comments about what she wears, and how she’s trying too hard to stay young, don’t quote biblical scripture, etc. posted by unintelligent people with nothing better to do than be pissy because you are unhappy in your own lives. I agree with the eating, texting, talking on phones attributing to more death on the road, as this happens more frequently. Take a look into your own lives, that’s something YOU can change, your stupid mean posts about what Jane did will change nothing except how people see YOU!
