There are search engines (Google), there are human-powered search engines (Mahalo), and now there’s the “world’s first people powered, points driven, search engine”: iRazoo.  I’m starting to dread the future; every company will use at least 30 words to define itself.

Issues of length aside, that phrase does a pretty good job of describing iRazoo.  According to the engine’s home page, would-be users just need to “start searching or register to earn points for each search and recommendation.”  They’re then able to “search all top search engines simultaneously,” “click search result and decide whether to recommend website to other people,” and “exchange points for rewards.”

Sounds good, right?  And the concept has already won a number of fans, including Search Engine Journal’s Arnold Zafra.  But Eric Odom didn’t seem to think that iRazoo’s search results were quite as useful as Google’s, and Graham Charlton points out that the recommendation system may be easy for users to “game.”

There’s one more problem here, and it involves those tempting prizes.  “Be prepared to be patient . . . as an iPod shuffle amounts to 58,000 points!” writes Michael Garrett.  So with iRazoo’s points cap set at 50 per day, it would take over three years to earn one of those (although there is no limit on “refer a friend” points, and a person with 5,800 pals who are willing to join can snatch his or her shuffle today).

Is anyone else reminded of those fundraisers where children have to sell 100,000 Milky Ways in order to get a bike?  That never stops the kiddies from trying, though, and iRazoo is sure to win over some users, as well.
