Since Imeem somehow managed to sign deals with all four major record labels, we don’t think arranging this new agreement put a major strain on the company.  Still, Imeem’s acquisition of Anywhere.FM appears to be an important step forward in its development.

In essence: online music community, meet online music player.  There’s more to it than that, though, with Nick Gonzalez writing, "Anywhere.FM has the best upload and player interfaces I’ve seen, but lacked a solid monetization method."Imeem Acquires Anywhere.FM

Imeem should be able to help out on that front; although not wildly successful, it’s managed to offer users free music, make money from ads, and as mentioned a moment ago, generally stay on the good side of the industry’s most powerful corporations.

So now we just need to see how Imeem and Anywhere.FM work together.  In a statement, Dalton Caldwell, Imeem’s founder and CEO, said, "Anywhere.FM makes it simple for consumers to bring their music to the Web and discover new artists through recommendations and social connections.  That’s a great fit with what we do.  Combining Anywhere.FM’s expertise with the reach and scope of the imeem community creates some truly exciting possibilities, and we’re psyched they’re joining our team."

Fair enough.  And on a final side note: that may be the first time we’ve ever seen a founder and CEO use the word "psyched."

One would imagine that a site which does for music what youtube did for video would be an instant success (after all the legal shenanigans get squared away). But while imeems growth has been steady it hasn’t been explosive in the same way that napster or youtube managed. in fact a huge indicator of the slow penetration of imeem service comes from last week -  when last.fm announced their ’3 play limit’ feature, thousands of journalists and bloggers haled it as a huge step forward for free music – mostly because they’d never heard of imeem and didn’t realise that the same huge step forward had happened months ago without them noticing.

So, putting a myspace or youtube UI over a napster inspired filesharing system only gets you so far, so maybe adding a good UI will make all the difference?

I have been visiting imeem a lot since I discovered it and I gotta say it has improved a lot since its start. There is a wide range of stuff available and it only gets better. I hope imeem continues to grow strongly.
