  • Hulu announced that it’s adding a new original series to its slate. It’s called Casual, and comes from Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air).

The show is described as a ten-episode, single-camera, half-hour comedy, which follows a dysfunctional family with a bachelor brother and his newly-divorced sister. They coach each other through the “crazy world of dating (on-line and off)” while living together and raising a teenager.

Reitman will executive produce and direct the first episode along with writer Zander Lehmann and Helen Estabrook (Reitman’s production partner).

“Jason Reitman uniquely blends comedy and drama in a way that touches the human spirit. We are honored to work with him to bring the next distinctive voice, Zander Lehmann, to television,” said Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President and Head of Content at Hulu.

“I’ve long looked for the right first step into episodic storytelling,” said Reitman. “In Zander Lehmann, I have found the perfect collaborator. His writing is hilarious and provocative.”

Hulu is following the lead of its rivals like Netflix and Amazon in going after more and more original content. Last month, we learned that it greenlit 11/22/63, an original series based on the Stephen King book of the same name.

Casual will hit Hulu in 2015.
