The market for e-books and e-book readers seems to be growing bigger and bigger.  It’s not at all time to declare the death of the paperback, but new UK data from Hitwise shows that searches for certain e-book-related terms are becoming much more common.

According to Robin Goad, "Over the last year UK interest in e-books has grown significantly, with searches for ‘ebooks’ doubling between January 2008 and 2009."  Searches for the Sony Reader are way up, and even searches for the Amazon Kindle – which isn’t yet available in the UK – aren’t too rare.

Add in Amazon’s recent fourth-quarter earnings report (which was positive), and the situation looks quite cheery.

There may be some mitigating factors, however.  Although Goad writes, "relative to population, the market share of searches for the ‘kindle’ in the US is the almost the same as the market share of searches in UK for the ‘sony reader,’" Amazon has remained unwilling to share exact Kindle sales figures.

Then there’s the fact that the second most popular search term including the word "ebooks" is "free ebooks," so again, interest might not be translating into open wallets.

The situation will bear watching as the recession continues and the second-generation Kindle is released.
