  • Batman is pretty busy this year. Not only is the caped crusader coming to home consoles and PC in this year’s Arkham Origins, but he’s also making his way to handheld devices with Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate.

For those just joining us, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is a companion title to this year’s console title that furthers the narrative started in Arkham Origins. In this game, Batman is sent to Blackgate Prison to contain a prison rebellion started by the inmates. The gameplay takes cues from the Metroidvania genre as players will explore Blackgate Prison freely while picking up new upgrades along the way.

The game also features the same melee combat and stealth gameplay of the console titles, but set in a 2.5D perspective. It should present an interesting new take on the Batman Arkham gameplay that we’ve all come to love.

By far, the most exciting aspect of Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is that it’s being developed by armature. It’s a relatively unknown studio, but it’s staffed by a number of core team members that worked on the Metroid Prime series at Retro Studios. They understand Metroid-style exploration better than most and the gameplay of Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate should benefit greatly from their experience.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate launches October 25 for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.
