Over 100,000 Harley-Davidson enthusiasts are converging on Milwaukee, WI for the 110th anniversary celebration for the iconic American motorcycle manufacturer that begins on Thursday.

Revelers will be treated to over 60 musical acts including ZZ Top, Kid Rock, and Aerosmith. The company is offering special factory tours and the local Harley-Davidson Museum will offer special displays of famous bikes including “Serial Number One” the oldest bike in existence. The museum will also be the center of a custom bike show with over 160 bikes in 11 categories will be on display.

Riders can even get the ultimate sign of the biker lifestyle with a free 110th anniversary tattoo.

Mark-Hans Richer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Harley-Davidson told a local NBC station that “This is actually the end of our anniversary year. It’s a return to the mecca of motorcycling in Milwaukee — which is hard to say three times fast but you get the idea.”

The company was founded in 1903 by a pair of young gearheads named William Harley and Arthur Davidson. Harley was just 21 and Davidson was only 20 when they hung a shingle outside a 10 by 15 wooden shed in the Davidson backyard and offered their first motorcycle for sale.

By 1920, Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturing company in the world selling nearly 30,000 bikes a year. Sales plunged to just under 4,000 in 1933. However, Harley-Davidson was one of just two American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression.

company was sold to American Machine and Foundry (AMF) in 1969 and nearly went bankrupt in the 1980’s. A 45% tariff on heavy motorcycles along with a restructuring to focus on classic styles and heavily customizable designs led to a resurgence in the company’s fortunes. Today, Harley-Davidson generates over $5 billion in revenue and employs 6,000 people.

The anniversary festival continues through Sunday.

who can afford a harley….not me

Love Harleys but there over priced and have poor engine design.

    • Gary

Harley’s last major design was German. It took German engineering to fix a chronic oil leak.

Who cares? Harley-Davidson caters to the old and rich. They price bikes out of the reach of mainstream America. I personally hope Indian Motors kicks H-D’s butt in the marketplace. The best bike on the market is the BMW anyway……

what a bunch of cry babies,Harley Davidson, regardless of the price, is an American institution that has stood the test of time. I know they are not made in the USA any more so save your breath. By the way, check craigslist, one could pick up a used sporty for around 3000.00

Sounds like a bunch of hate. I don’t hear this much crying when people buy a Porche,Lombroghini, Mercedes Benz or Gold Wing. People buy what they want to buy based on their financial ability or their heart. I am tired of so much hate…..If you like and can afford a Harley then by all means buy a Harley. If you don’t like or can’t afford a Harley then get what makes you happy. It’s as simple as that. The previous comments are immature. You could have just clicked off the page and not insulted us RUBS. We RUBS will be much happier without you. Now go watch cartoons, and eat your cookies and milk!

Nowa dayze Harley’s are pricy***The economy has crunched everybody’s pocket.***If you want one and can’t afford one*** New that is*** You have to have a good paying job (minimum of 40k or better) with perfect credit***But eeeeven with that the payments and interest alone is another crunch that keeps buyers from buying the most wanted putt around.***Your chances of wanting a putt are better off at a local giveaway.***If you do get one***NEVER LET IT GO***JUST REBUILD IT***

    Happy Birthday HD

Perhaps this time they can smash a Honda Goldwing or a BMW motorcycle instead of a Suzuki. Matches the class act that Harley has always represented.

    • Don Ruks

Trere are more parts made in the USA on my VALKYRIE than your Harley, Bite me!

    • Don Ruks

Gary, you can’t catch a honda so how will you smash it? follow the leader, he’s on a Honda
