Halle Berry’s “Extant” Ratings Not Great

By: Lacy Langley - August 3, 2014

Halle Berry’s show, Extant, on CBS has been bumped to a new time slot. In case you’re a fan and didn’t get the news yet, Extant will now come on at 10 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. on Wednesdays.

The move is reportedly the result of a fairly significant ratings disappointment for Halle Berry’s show. It premiered July 9th to a lukewarm reception. One would think that, with Steven Spielberg in the list of producers, Extant would take off. But it just didn’t.

Halle Berry didn’t do so great with the key demographic, unfortunately. Extant drew a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is the most important to advertisers. While those numbers made it the summer’s top new series premiere, it was way below Under the Dome, which was CBS’ summer event series last year.

Under the Dome scored a 3.3 rating among the 18-49 crowd.

Halle Berry is really quite amazing in this show. It is her first role in a long time at performing on the small screen, and her big screen fumbles are quickly forgotten.

I’m thinking Halle Berry in Catwoman and Die Another Day, in case you were wondering.

She plays an astronaut that comes home from a 13-month solo mission in space only to find out that she is pregnant. Add to that the fact that Halle Berry’s character is infertile, and it’s quite an amazing premise.

Halle Berry has really enjoyed filming the show, and that seems to come through in her performance. She said of the thrill of working with Steven Spielberg,

“A name like that, you don’t really sneeze at. I know the quality of his work and I know that he loves this sort of genre. This was a character that when I first read (the script) was so relatable to me.” Halle Berry said. “While I’m not an astronaut or scientist — far, far from it — I still had an understanding about the human quality of this woman and her struggle to not only find time for herself, but also to be a good mother. The fact that she’s a scientist becomes a little bit irrelevant pretty fast. It becomes very human.”

Hopefully the new time spot will drum up ratings a little for Halle Berry and Extant! Again, it is now on CBS Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

Extant requires a fairly sophisticated view. PBS might have been a better venue in a 90 minute episode format.

I hadn’t heard a thing about the show, but accidentally tuned the channel to the first episode and have watched it ever since. Maybe it didn’t get enough publicity. Idk. Not normally a fan of Berry, but I think she and the other actors are doing a fine job.

  • Oh please

I like the show. I hope it makes it.

I think she is an arrogant person. Glad to see her failing. She Calls out all her baby’s daddys. She is a hot mess. I cant stand her……………….

  • Just My Take

I hope Halle Berry’s new show EXTANT does make it . . . I am a huge fan! Halle Berry is a phenomenal actress . . . She cannot help but to do well . . . She has proven her ability as a well-rounded actress time and time again.

I’m not a science fiction fan but I am a Halle Berry fan. Hope the show makes it.

Coincidentally I sent Spielberg a treatment about extinction in 2002. This looks alot like what I sent to him and it was returned to me. They stole my idea. So if it fails, it’s because it was stolen! It was called “The Sun”.

Go through your files, Dreamworks. Find my treatment, contact me and make it right! You have my name and address!

How will it do against Motive.

I no longer respect Berry and as a result will not watch anything that she is associated with. She always complains about wanting privacy so I say we give her that by forgetting about her and moving on.

I love this show and never miss it. Berry and everyone else is doing a fine job. I’ve always thought that one problem throughout Halle Berry’s career was bad press, possibly do to an agent problem. Perhaps this show will get her back on track. I can’t wait for the next episode.

Great show, great acting really rooting for the show and hope people give it a chance.

It sucks, that’s why! The other sci fi show, The Strain is a lot better, scarier and better written than this Spielberg-produced mess.

Big fan of Berry & Spielberg. We would like to see this show be successful, but to be honest it is a little slow moving. Although the performances are fine, it can be dull.

Overall, I like this show and Berry’s acting is on point…as is her TV husband and son. One thing that is making me back off just a bit is that the tension in some of the shows is constant. At the end of the show I’m wrung out. I don’t care for some of the subplots and characters that much. It’s to the point where there are too many “bad” guys. Give us a breather more often and I’ll continue watching.

I love this show. The cast is excellent. I hope it makes it.

If you’re a Berry fan you’ll like the show. It can’t compare to “The Bridge” on FX.

Watched this show because Halle Berry was in it. She is a gifted actress and a beauty. We are fortunate to have her on TV.
