Since no one else seems interested in arguing reality here, I guess the burden falls upon me. The internet is primarily driven by two things: Porn, more porn, piracy, and a lot more porn. Yes there are entirely “legitimate” uses for the internet like “social networking”, or communication, or business. The reality is that these things are ancillary to the internet’s indispensability as an information tool. The first amendment didn’t know what it was in for when the internet became widespread here. A lot of that information happens to be porn, or warez, and information gathering. A lot of that information gathering happens to be on information that the government nor any businesses have any “business” knowing. It’s not their business if the people are trying to arm themselves with knowledge to strike down government oppression through bills like SOPA or PIPA or NDAA or EEA or ACTA or HR 1981. This is why people don’t like it. This and a lot more reasons – no one wants to advertise what they do from the comfort of their chair because it’s really not anyone’s business. The fact they are doing it using a service they over-pay for doesn’t make it okay for that service to datamine. You have all kinds of things at play here – consumer rights, business rights, first amendment rights, etc.
