They Can't Be All Evil

Google employees in different cities around the world have been doing their best to prove that Google is not evil. Well, I haven’t seen this cited as an official reason, and I like to think that they’re doing it because they care, but different branches of Google are helping children in a variety of capacities this holiday season.

For example, in the UK, their engineering recruitment team decided to forgo their annual "Secret Santa" gift exchange, and instead use the money they would’ve spent on that to buy a Wii for a Children’s hospital ward. Ok, you may be thinking that’s not a whole lot considering this is Google we’re talking about, but this wasn’t a company thing. It wasn’t the top-level executives. This was just a small team of employees who rather than giving each other gifts, decided to turn thatinto something good for some kids that would have otherwise been lacking gifts.

Google Mexico held a "doodle" contest with the theme of "The Mexico We Want" and Google donated to a charity for helping malnourished kids in Mexico for each doodle submitted. IN all, over 154,000 pounds of food were donated.

Here in America, there were some different things going on in various cities. A post on the Official Google Blog says, "Boston Googlers delivered gifts to some very grateful students at a local school and spent the morning reading and playing with the children. The Chicago office held its first-ever holiday blood drive, donating 36 units of blood. And the Ann Arbor office held a "CANstruction" competition, creating sculptures out of canned food, personal items and baby items, which were all later donated."

Just as that same post says, the holidays are a time for giving, and while we continue to see people’s lives in ruin all over the world from war, terrorism, illness, accidents, etc., it’s good to know that some of the less fortunate are not being forgotten.

Google has a long way to go to convince people it’s not evil. Like firstly get the scraper and cloaking sites with page ranks of 7-9 off the top of google.
