Google says AdWords’ real-time targeting and reporting are ideal for finding an efficient way to reach customers in the economic downturn. The company has detailed six tactics for maximizing your AdWords investment.

1. Focus your ads on low prices and savings.

"Consumers care about prices more than ever, especially on day-to-day purchases," says Google. "When someone searches on a particular product, you know they’re interested; by using your ad to tell them that you’ve got the highest quality and the best price, you’re more likely to earn their click."

Focus ads on low prices

2. Use value-related keywords.

People are constantly looking for bargains. Google suggests using keywords that cater to this mentality. The company recommends using the AdWords Search-based keyword tool and Search Query Performance report to find higher-performing keywords that people are actually searching.

Use value-related keywords

3. Make sure your ad groups are targeted and relevant.

"Ads perform best when their ad text reflects the ad group’s keywords; this makes ads more relevant to their intended audience," says Google. "Make sure that both the text and the keywords in each ad group focus on a specific topic or product."

Make sure ad groups are relevant

4. Don’t waste money on irrelevant clicks.

Google suggests using negative keywords to filter out traffic from people looking for things that you don’t offer. They use an example that if you sell peanut butter, Purchase World of Warcraft Gold, you might want to use "allergy" as a negative keyword.

don't waste money on irrelevant clicks

5. Make it easy for customers to buy.

This tactic is all bout the landing page. Put some thought into your landing page, because people don’t want to hunt around trying to find where they need to go to buy the item they clicked on the ad to buy in the first place. Why make it hard? It should be as easy a process as possible.

make it easy for customers

6. Focus your money on your high-performers.

Google has a free conversion tracking tool that will let you see what keywords and ads are performing best. It is wise to focus your time and resources on the ones you are getting the most value out of.

focus money on high performers

That’s the six tactics Google provides for maximizing you AdWords investment. Performance is more important than ever when there is not as much money to play around with. If you’re using PPC as an advertising method, focus on eliminating the waste of money by getting the most you can out of your campaigns. Google provides more resources for each of these tactics here.

    Hi! there Chris,

Thanks for sharing this. These six tips are very nice and glad that google took an effort to share it with the fellow advertisers on this economic situation. Though some are basics, like adding negative keywords, tracking the conversions and the money making keywords but they are critical.

By the way, I guess most people don’t do (at least newbies) is ” To create ad groups that are targeted and relevant”… I was paying more but few months ago I started creating a highly themed adgroups and found the cost per click was reduced. I’ve learned it the hard way but hope this post can open the eyes to many people. Good luck to all the PPC advertisers.

    Chris – Keep em coming.

Over the last 18 months I must have researched and read literally hundreds of articles on adwords but none comes even close to how this has spelled it out in plain english. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am now in the process of reworking my whole campaign.

Don’t thank me. Thank Google. You can learn a lot of great tips like these simply following their blogs. In fact, they have all kinds of resources that are full of great info like this. Blogs, YouTube channels, help centers, discussion groups, etc. Google blogs how a company should blog, in my opinion. I’ve discussed this before.

Here, in my country SEO promoters and companies have employees hired specially to click on competition’s ads. What do you say about that ? I spent for one of my customers over 500USD for Google Adwords in just 5 days. After investigation I found out that 2 companies hit over 3000 clicks on our adverts. They earn pretty much. Do you want to know why ? Because they receive over 10,000USD/month to keep their clients on first page and their works is to keep everyone at distance.
Google is doing NOTHING, they don’t care, they care only about MONEY. It’s all about money. But when you do some profit with your adsense they close your account stating “unauthorized clicks” and BANG, all amount forfeited.

Maybe in West things are different, but no everywhere on the planet.

What keeps working out there is not working in my country.

    Thanks for the time.

Finally somebody has the guts to speak out the thuth about this billionaire business. Everybody is behaving like good school boys believing everything the big G says is the holly thuth.
Just compare the organic results increasing for the sites that are paying good in the sponsored links, and they say one thing has nothing to do with the other. If you pay in the sponsored links you go high in the organic listings even if you buy links, use copied text, use farm links, etc.
You even get hundreds of pages indexed with exactly the same title and description.

The internet is global and the eastern part of Europe has some organizations indeed using these practices…on US markets! Beware because it is indeed ALL about the greenbacks. I was amazed when I saw this video confirming the money icon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76fSePL2qmo

Not all of these are cost saving tips, especially the top 2. be wary of putting low cost or free offers n your ad text if you don’t wreally want that traffic — your clickthrough will go way up and (what a surprise) you will pay Google more $$.

My experience with the Google Adwords process has been mixed. Using their keyword optimization process combined with their formula to establish and determine your quality scores has actually increased click costs and lowered conversions. The more I use their tools the higher the cost has risen. You might be better served picking your keywords, and determining your ads content and sticking with iit or focusing your advertising dollars in other mediums.

    • http://www.caoh.org Guest

PPC has become a money machine for everyone, but the advertiser. Not only are conversions low but look at the bounce rates and referrers with no conversions. Make sure you block those. The goal is conversions not the number of clicks. And believe me one does not necessarily lead to the other!

Much like Google to publicize so-called “tips” which ignore a most basic aspect of advertising.

Going for “cheap” may work for some products in certain market segments but, crisis or not, a large number of potential customers want quality more than ever.

    • http://www.seosean.com SEO Services

I agree using the work “cheap”, “discount”, etc… are not going to generate quality leads for some industries. Plus is is no always the case for consumers – that they want cheap or discounted services. Take lawyers for example, would you want a “cheap lawyer”?

I have used adwords for years now and you have to be careful what words you use. Most of my stuff is real niche and I don’t have big problems, but I did an ad for some lesbian t-shirt designs I own and really got ripped off.

Adwords charged me for 80 clicks in one week. According to Google Analytics, the site had only 17 visitors that entire week, and only about 7 of those resulted from Google. The rest came from my own links on other sites of mine.

I write Google about them ripping me off and I get back form letters telling me how to use Adwords. They are scamming lots of people. Can’t even get a response from a person. What do their thousands of employees do?

  • http://www.taxguru.in/ Sandeep

If you want it to say “Buy Kratom” in the title, you should write “BuyKratom” instead. This normally works.
