In case you haven’t noticed by now, Google has gotten bigger. The homepage and search results pages now have a bigger searchbox, complete with a bigger font when you type in a query.

"Although this is a very simple idea and an even simpler change, we’re excited about it — because it symbolizes our focus on search and because it makes our clean, minimalist homepage even easier and more fun to use," says Marissa Mayer, Vice President, Search Products & User Experience at Google.

Besides the larger font in the search box, the text for the suggestions below is larger as well. Here is a look at the difference between the old Google and the new Google:

Google Super Sized

"Over the past 11 years, we’ve made a number of changes to our homepage. Some are small and some are large," says Mayer. "In this case, it’s a small change that makes search more prominent."

"Google has always been first and foremost about search, and we’re committed to building and powering the best search on the web — now available through a supersized search box," she adds.

The only reason we’re discussing the fact that Google has gotten bigger with regards to design elements, is really because Google is so big in terms of search market share and just the daily lives of many, many users. And hey, this is the search industry we’re covering.

It just goes to show how important Google is that someone dedicated an entire article to the fact that they increased the size of the search box.

    • Chris Crum

Yeah, I know. I’m guessing I’m not the only to do so either.

    • http://bbmedia.com.au Garth Penglase

Yeah wow! can you write about my home page too? I change a button size today.

  • Guest

frankly I think the bigger font is annoying.

  • Adam

Hmm, i too dont like the new font size.

Its fine for people who cant read, but you have a 22″ screen, its as if i am looking at a billboard.

Should be an option to change it in preferences instead of being told what i have to view it.

  • Guest

yeah awesome changes mateyy….next lets make the font coloured !!! *gasp* :)

  • Anonymous

personally i liked the existing search screen and not the bigger version.

I think the change will annoy more than improve googles search feature

  • Guest

I don’t like the bigger font. I’m not a senior citizen. The time will come when I get a bit blind and I’ll love a bigger everything but please not now

  • Damo

I hate the new font size, looks fugly! bad move google, make it an option

  • Guest

I do not like this BIG FONT!

  • http://www.superfoodsplan.com Anonymous

This could be a sign of the times.

The baby boomers are all getting older. That’s one of the parts of the big health reform debate. Google is just moving with the times and has recognized that an important part of its audience needs reading glasses.

It could also be a reaction to the increase in netbooks which all have small screens.

For me, I eat plenty of carrots and the other good stuff in my wife’s latest diet book purchase – the supper foods plan http://superfoodsplan.com – which keeps my eyesight in check and also means that the viagra junk mails remain unanswered!

Who at Google thought people would actually welcome this change? It looks stupid and is annoying. Worse, my boss sitting behind me at the back of my office can now read the nonsense I’m Googling while at work!

Yuck. Does anyone actually like this new look? I feel the same way I did when Coca-Cola came out with the “New Coke” in the eighties: betrayed. Someone dropped the brand ball on this one.

    • http://garthpenglase.com Garth Penglase

yeah, and coke has never looked as good or tasted as good after they made the big changes.both the older packaging and the older tadte left what we’ve got now for dead. I stopped drinking coke then, and it wasn’t ’til they brought out Diet Coke that I started again and that was mainly due to my wife. But then I realised that phenylkeuronetics (phenylanaline etc. all the phenyls that are usedin non-sugar sweeteners) are really quite bad for your health, cancer causing/affect sight health etc. so stopped that too.

First off, I think its just ugly. The smaller font was much more streamlined and did not look silly. The first time I saw the “New” Google I thought I had zoomed in by accident in Firefox. But then I realized that it was actually just that big now.

It just makes the font look pixelated and has this IE 7+, bad looking “ClearText” look to it that I hate.

Secondly, I actually think this is poor usability. Although their intentions have good usability in mind (increasing font sizes is never really bad), people have come so accustomed to how it was before that changing anything at all just seems silly. People will be like what the heck just happened to Google? Is this Google? Am I on a phishing site? What’s going on?

I really think it just causes more confusion than anything else. Granted most people won’t freak out, but I just don’t see the point in changing things for the sake of changing something. It’s worked just fine for 10+ years, leave it alone.

If anything, make an option on the page somewhere that says something like SuperSize my Google. At least that way the user can choose what they want.

Anyway that’s the end of my rant.

    • sb

lol same here, i thought i had zoomed in or hit a wrong button and i spent like 15 minutes trying to change it, like euh why does it look like this.

i don’t like this either, it actually hurts my eyes cuz it’s so big and you’re like what, i think the smaller darker text was just fine.

you’re right, they should give an option to have the old verson text or the new text, like on youtube how you can have the old page or new page on your profile. i opted for the new one but i could still change back if i wanted too.

That is so funny, these exact thoughts went through my head:

    *What did I do
*How do I get it back
    *Man this is ugly

  • Diane

Please can we have the old, smaller font size back?! I feel like I’m looking at the search area through a magnifying glass and actually have to sit right back to make it look better.

If you really want to cater for the older, hard-to-read-what-I’m-typing crowd, then add an option under your ‘more’ section where you can choose the larger font size as an option!!

  • Guest

THIS text size is terrible. It makes me feel bug-eyed. Go back to the old text size ASAP.

  • Guest

New larger font size is bad, very bad. I’m old with poor eyesight. I dislike the change to larger font. What do we have to do to implore Google to reverse the change?

  • Guest

wow i hate this new google im seriously considering switching homepages. please change it back!

  • dav

Bring back the old font size in the Google search box. Please! The new superzied font brings back memories of my first days in kindergarten, when everything was written L-A-R-G-E for us little ones. Also, the new font in just plain unappealing. Sure hope the folks at Google are reading these commenst.

  • Guest

It’s HORRIBLE! Change it back to the size it was, or at least install an option to adjust it as desired. The new look is ugly and clunky. It’s like someone’s mother in platform Mary Janes.

    • Guest

I spent the better part of two hours trying to figure out how I had ‘accidentally’ changed up Google! The only good thing about this is that it wasn’t me. This is an example of what happens when a company in good financial shape decides that they know what’s best for the customer/user. So all of a sudden we’re all blind and need the divine intervention of Google’s executive management team to decide what is good for us. Probably what happened was someone new showed up and had to do ‘something’, ‘anything’, in order to justify their existence within the company. It would have been ‘way to easy’ to install an option of what font size an individual would prefer, but nope, we’re going to do this the HARD way! Hopefully, they’ll install this option in response to the feedback, but I’m not holding my breath. I’m a creature of habit and I love my little well-worn rabbit trails!

  • Michael Penney

Good lord, people… get a grip. How many of us ACTUALLY visit the Google.com page anyway? 9 times out of ten, I’m searching from my browser bar anyway.

It’s just a font. Stop acting like little children that got the wrong colour toy car for Christmas. You look ridiculous.
