Google Maps App Gets A Bunch Of New Features

  • Google announced some new features for its Google Maps app on Android and iOS, including lane guidance, the ability to save a map for offline use, new restaurant, bar and hotel filters, Uber integration, public transit notifications, and location saving.

When we say lane guidance, we mean Google will direct you as to which lane you should be in while you’re driving so you don’t miss a turn.

“The Google Maps app now shows you which lane to stay in or move to so you’ll never find yourself driving for miles down the wrong road,” explains software engineering manager Jeffrey Hightower. “You’ll also have easy access to alternate routes while you’re navigating, so you can choose the best drive for you.”

Maps can be saved for later offline use. Just hit “save map to use offline,” and name it, and you’ll be able to access it later when signed in.

The aforementioned restaurant, bar and hotel filters allow you to browse venues by hours, rating, price, etc.

The Uber integration works if you have the Uber app installed, and lets you compare your ride with transit and walking directions from Google Maps (in supported cities). If you select Uber, you’ll go right to the app.

“With more than a million public transit stops on Google Maps, you’ll get reliable information to help you get where you’re going,” says Hightower. “Next time you’re in Chicago, search for directions to Lincoln Park Zoo, tap the train icon, and select ‘Depart at’ to choose the time and day you want to leave—or even ‘last train home’ for those night owls—so you get the most accurate transit information for your needs.”

If you come across somewhere you want to go, tap on the place card, and hit the star icon to save the location. You’ll be able to see it from any device when you’re signed in. You’l also be able to find Street View imagery for tourist attractions from the place cards (where available).
