Great Britain is not, according to most accounts, the gambling capital of the world.  Nonetheless, the area has received a special nod of sorts as Google is preparing to end a ban on gambling ads.

Starting tomorrow, Google UK will stop lumping gambling and gaming together with drugs, prostitution, and weapons.  Gambling ads will still be treated as a type of adult content, and thus be screened out by SafeSearch, but allowing them at all in England, Scotland, and Wales is a huge step.

Agree?  Disagree?  James Cashmore, the industry head of Google Europe, explained to Mark Sweney, "Over the last few months we’ve been reviewing our gambling advertising policy in Great Britain to ensure it is as consistent as possible with local business practices."

This seems to mean that we shouldn’t look for gambling ads to pop up everywhere else in the near future.  The statement also implies that Google isn’t reacting to the economic meltdown by relaxing its morals.

Still, gambling companies may push a little harder now that their figurative feet are in the door, and Google will no doubt enjoy the increase in its income.  We’ll keep an eye out for more news on this front.
