The Google Friend Connect Team has introduced a new feature to the service – a social bar. You can set the bar to appear at the top or bottom of you page.

The toolbar contains the following elements:

– On the far left, visitors can join your site, see their identity, and edit their profiles and settings.

– your site’s activity stream, including links to recent posts made anywhere on your site

– The wall gadget, which can host a discussion for the whole site, a section of pages, or each individual page, letting your visitors easily read and leave comments.

– a place for visitors to see the other members of your site, check out their profiles, send friend requests, etc.

Adding the social bar is simple enough. Simply:

1. Go to google.com/friendconnect
2. Click on your website and select "social bar"
3. Scroll down to choose your options
4. Click "generate code"
5. Copy the code and paste it into your HTML

The tool should make Google Friend Connect a little more useful for users who still question the purpose of the service. If nothing else, it brings the functionality a little closer to the forefront. That is if you don’t feel that the bar is intrusive to your site. It could certainly push the social element you are looking to establish either way.

I’ve just spent a couple or three days implementing GFC on my http://www.devonponies.co.uk site and this latest addition sounds like a continued move in the right direction.

My one major criticism is that, so far anyway, there’s no formatting in postings – not even line / para breaks.

How is someone supposed to use the review gadget to write a short, pithy, readabe review, if it all scrunches up into one long para?

Other major concerns are that there’s no email alerts so the site owner knows that a new posting has been made. And you can’t edit a post – so if spellung is important to you, better not make any mistoooks.

Come on Google, can do better!

      Hopeful of Plymouth UK.

Thanks, Chris, for this information. It sounds like a good idea for blogs but I’m not sure it’s such a good idea to put on my safety and security web site even though I’m on lots of social networks to market it. It also sounds like it might need some improvement so waiting might not be a bad idea.

I like Google stuff since its usually very user friendly, clean, and easy to install or take out. Thanks Highton for providing us with a link of a site that has it in action already. Always be testing.

I guess it’s no surprise that Google’s maintaining the overall lead. They have superior search technology, greater vision and have executed some major strategic acquisitions to their favor.

I already have the “follow” gadget on my blog, so I don’t know if I’ll use this.
Lots of people say good things about Twitter and I haven’t subscribed it either.
I’m not that much into social websites.

    Take care,

Seems good on the surface as it may increase site traffic. But would the webmaster have to play moderator?

The social bar packages many of the basic social functions — sign-in, site activities, comments, and members — into a single strip that appears at the top or bottom of your website.
