The bright kids in the Googleplex decided to contribute a little something to Steve Jobs’ keynote performance at MacWorld, and announced the release of Google Earth for the Mac OS.

Other than a Gmail Notifier for OS X, developed by a Google engineer as a project, Macintosh users have watched as project after project from the Google Labs arrived with a Windows Only system requirement. Until today, that included Google Earth.

Google has now announced the arrival of Google Earth for the Mac:

Available for free, Mac users can now engage in the immersive mapping experience of Google Earth, exploring and annotating the world with ease. Google Earth for Mac is available for download at http://earth.google.com.

Google Earth is like a web browser, but for the earth. As such, it needs to be accessible from multiple platforms. Available in beta for 10.4.x OS, Google Earth for Mac offers the same features as the PC version, such as animated driving directions, zoom in and out capabilities, 3D buildings view, and more. Google Earth Plus and Google Earth Pro are not yet available for Mac.

Google Earth Team’s Chikai Ohazama discussed the first official Mac application from Google in the Earth blog:

We’re happy to finally have some good news for the, ahem, vocal Mac enthusiasts we’ve been hearing from. Let’s just say that we have gotten more than a few “requests” for a Mac version of Google Earth.

Google’s release of its founders’ pet project software bundle called Google Pack, announced by Larry Page during his CES 2006 keynote address brought no joy to Mac users; every bit of software in the pack called for Windows XP. Now that Google has given something to the Mac community, how long will it be until Chris DiBona and company make a Google application available for Linux?
