Globe-trotting Search Engine Journal editor Loren Baker has noted the appearance of queries from google.com/finance in his site’s logfiles.

The google.com/finance URL appeared as a referrer entry many times as Baker reported, which could be a hint of a pending product launch.

Baker described the activity he is seeing from google.com/finance in his post:

Thinking that this just may be a fluke in my referrals, I dug a bit deeper to find that SEJ has had multiple referrals from the Google.com/finance page, all for queries of “GOOG”, Google’s stock symbol.

Futhermore, all of these referrals lead to the most recent news stories on Google which we have published over the past week. The Google Finance channel or complementary search listings must be highlighting either blog or news stories related to stock ticker symbols.

One has to appreciate the Borg reference in the referral string from Google; Microsoft and Borg have practically been synonyms in the tech community for years.

Without Baker’s observations, it would be easy to disregard the error message currently generated when visiting google.com/finance. He noted how the error message now appearing for google.com/finance has been seen for URLs just before they launched along with a new product.

That doesn’t look like the case any more. Google.com/toothpaste and google.com/hunting return the same error message, and it does not seem likely Google Labs has been working on a browser-based teeth whitening product for elk. It appears Google has tweaked its server to throw off the more dedicated fans who track the site.
