  1. Those links might be positively affecting your PageRank (PageRank does not go down from “bad” links like those from adult sites). In general, you don’t have to worry about bad links like that which point to your site that aren’t under your control.

  2. A lot of good “answers”. But the most interesting part is that google changing the Algorythm will keep raising questions and keep us working..

    • Nice job.There’s always the chance that we’ll discount directory links in the future. What we were seeing was quite a few novice people would see the “directory” recommendation.Thanks for sharing.

    • It is a good info.Lot of info has been provided.This does not mean no action is being taken on the offending sites. Also, the TLD of the sites should not be a factor being taken into an account. For this reason reporting both, web spam and PageRank passing link selling makes sense and contributes.Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks for providing the useful info.If the .edu or .gov page is linked to, then yes, because that webpage now has some authority, just like with any (non-.gov or .edu) page.

    • This is a good post for me.It’s hard to even find original content on the site. The user experience for a lot of those article directory sites can be pretty bad too. So you’d see users landing on those sorts

  6. Some of these answers have come as a surprise to me because I used to think the other way around.
    Specially these:
    1) How often does your search algorithm change?
    2) Could sharing an IP address with a bad site get my site penalized?
    3) Is there PageRank boost from .edu or .gov links?

    While the others were quite according to my expectations.

  7. I’m glad to see that Google emphasizes on original content and user experience. But what I would like to see in the future are higher rankings for articles that are current, since a lot of content out there is extremely out-dated.

  10. I dont know why ppl obsess about what google reveals. Just make a site user freindly and forget the algo. Sure we can learn little tips in order to not make mistakes but google will always ensure good results a returned and so far they have beaten the spammer largly.

  11. Too much attention is given to what google wants and does. If everybody is paying attention to Matt Cutts then how shall you gain? Just make a good site, its not rocket science, and its what google wants.

  18. Thanks for this post. It really clears up quite a bit of the questions I have had. Looking for these answers in a forum just leaves you right where you left of because everyone’s answers are contradicting the next persons. It’s good to hear it straight from the mouth of the “Googler’s” after all.

    How can you get so much knowledge about SEO? How do you know what does google like and doesn’t like?

  22. I don’t think that PR can do any affects in your ranking, there’s a lot of low PR websites that still can out ranked a much higher PR websites.

SO many of these questions fly around the webmaster communities and SO many people think they “know” what Google wants or does not want. It’s actually a little annoying, because I see many people ‘preaching’ misinformation to others. But because “someone said” that Google either ‘likes’ or ‘doesn’t like’ something, they take it and run with it.
