When the average person sees an advertisement, what do they most want to do?  Well, "see more ads" isn’t a common answer, but new "next" and "previous" buttons created by Google make some sense.

On the Inside AdSense Blog, Katie Mandel explained, "While the ads the user initially sees may be relevant to a publisher’s content, they may not be precisely what the user is seeking – for example, a user may see ads about cheddar and brie cheese but would prefer more information about Swiss cheese.  With the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons, users can view more cheese ads until a Swiss cheese ad appears."

Of course, with or without the buttons, users can also just leave the site, but since the buttons make this outcome less likely, publishers are likely to embrace their appearance.  Maybe not too much – Mandel adds, "You won’t generate earnings for clicks on the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons" – but at least a little.

Google will likely keep close tabs on the buttons’ use, as they may help the company refine AdSense’s targeting.  Also, the buttons are only for CPC text ads so far, but they seem like the sort of thing that could spread.  After apparently going through "months of testing," they almost certainly won’t disappear.
