Gene Hackman may be 82-years old, but he’s no lightweight when it comes to defending himself and his lady.

When Hackman and his wife were walking through downtown Santa Fe yesterday afternoon and found themselves approached by a homeless man, they weren’t alarmed; he was, according to authorities, someone they’d been in contact with before and had given food and money to. Apparently this time, however, he became aggressive and ended up calling Hackman’s wife a name, which led to an altercation. When he made a threatening move towards the couple, Hackman punched him.

No charges have been filed, and Hackman isn’t in trouble for the hit, authorities say.

“It was a simple battery case and it appears Mr. Hackman was acting in self-defense because he was concerned for his safety,” said Santa Fe police.

Hackman in “Unforgiven”. Caution: some NSFW language.

Way to go Gene! You still got it bro.

Hooray for Mr. Hackman! I respect a man that defends his lady especially after the “decided homless man” did his bad deed. I would have done the same.

Gives credence to the idea that I keep expressing.
“If it weren’t for the Marines, there’d be no United States”.
My childhood pal, Bud Mein, had joined the Marines.
Gutty little fart, he was; tougher than a junk yard dog.
In the meantime, I’m a coward, so I joined the U. S. Navy.
“Bud” became a casualty on Tarawa.
He was torn apart by a Jap mortar shell.
I’ve never forgiven the Japs for that.
Gene Hackman was too young to have fought on Tarawa.
But he’s an ex, and that’s good enough for me.

      Yawn. Same ol, same ol.

“Gene Hackman was too young to have fought on Tarawa.

“Don’t go confusin’ me with some whole other body..” Gene Hackman

  • Naomi Lu

I love Gene Hackman. If gene had a BODY GUARD he would not have to punch anyone but as it was, he had to do what he had to do, protect himself. Homeless people can be as dangerous as anyone else.

  • http://msn.com john jones

Good for you Gene ! No one is above a good slap in the mouth if they insult your wife . Being 82 just makes it even cooler . Protect the honor of your love ones , follow ” slugger Gene’s ” example .

  • Matt

I love this man even more than before. Don’t mess with the original Lex Luther. I couldn’t pick a better mental image of someone punching a homeless guy than Gene Hackman, except for possibly Robert Logia, But Gene Hackman comes in a strong first choice. Where is the friggin papparazzi when you want them there, I would love a pic of this.

  • James F. Harrington

Gene Hackman never planed on being an actor. He just fell into that job and thank God he chose that career. I still gets the shivers every time that I see his film…Enemy of the State in which he co-starred with Will Smith. Please come back for another thriller Gene.

  • Mot

Love Gene Hackman–he’s a favorite. I don’t like to see a homeless man punched; however, to defend oneself, it’s understandable; and Mr. Hackman doesn’t seem like someone you would want to offend.

  • https://www.facebook.com/digitalhowie Robert

I had a crazed homeless man charge me once. He tried to knock off my glasses but I readjusted them and said, “Hey, man,” in an angry voice and the punk did the right thing by walking away otherwise I woulda slammed his ass to the ground and kicked his face in. Homeless people are mostly harmless but some of them hyped up on whatever drug it is they’ve abused can definitely pose a threat. Way to go, Gene. Have always loved your acting, sir.

    • Ray Wray

Wow! Wow! The poor basterd had no idea how close he was to the grim reaper.

I was homeless for awhile and I found it offensive to be approched by homeless people begging for money or food!!! From experience they would get money and head straight for liquor store or dope house!!Good for Mr.Hackman you never know what their mentallity is at that moment!!!

  • R Epps

You don’t go assaultin’ Lex Luthor!

  • Lee Duhachek

    Way to go Little Bill!

  • Michael

Don’t the writers pay any attention to the police investigation? He was defending his wife and himself. The title might be appropriate if he just out-of-the-blue reached out and hit someone, but that isn’t what happened. The title is either irresponsible or incredibly uninspired.

  • Eamonn

Amanda Crum’s basic compositional skills are appalling. This is the worst English I have seen in a long time. A Hack.

    • Ray Wray

You are wrong. This story is well-written, journalistic English-easy to read, factual, and verifiable. What is apparently appalling are your comprehension “skills.” You also might check the definition of “appalling.”

  • http://windowsinternetexplorer guy huggins

Good for Gene. Just because the homeless are being coddled and fed by the taxpayers, there is no excuse for the way they act.In the civilised nations of the world.they are put out to pasture and learn to eat grass and other forage till they wake up. Tough —t.

  • http://yahoo grady

Gene! Good going! First the man was a rude man in front of a LADY! He is lucky Gene didn’t kick him in the but_! An gene’s wife didn’t use him like a rag doll an woop him up side the head. So it goes to show you some guy get thing for free, an may have a Mental thing going, but that is know reason to be RUDE TO A LADY! This is a Land where we watch out for or LADYS! Gene…when you’re in San Francisco, would love to introduce you to the homeless man with a sign that said he was hungry…I had purchased a sandwich for lunch at my office desk and in a weak moment offered it to him. His response was “F*** Y**. I don’t want your garbage”. Needless to say, my last donation to the homeless, thanks to this guy

  • ak

  • Brent Rankin

Way to go, Mr. Hackman! It’s the idiots like the guy you punched out that gives homelessness a bad rap. I’m homeless, but I’d never panhandle, fly a sign, or be rude to anyone. I hope you kicked the crap out of him when he went down.

    • Victoria

It’s not the locals – it’s a group of homeless – rude teens who hang in the plaza – the locals stay away from them – the people in santa are awesome and will give you the shirt off their back to help you

  • TDC

Obviously the homeless man is mentally ill. It’s disturbing to see the lack of compassion for sick, homeless people.

    • victoria

i knowwww he should have just OFFERED his wife to her! serious!?!?!?!??!

  • http://yahoo Marvin

    We miss you gene.

  • http://yahoo Suzanne Nelson

I too agree with the crappy headline. Thats the media for you. They immediately make Gene out to be the bad guy for punching some defenseless innocent poor homeless man. I too give to the homeless but they can be very, very nasty and agressive. The better headline would have been ” Gene Hackman gets in an altercative defending his wife” Leave the “poor homeless” indication out of it!

    • http://yahoo Suzanne Nelson

Sorry, I was typing so fast because I can’t stand the media that I just saw my mistake. It is “altercation”

  • louie

Well done, sir. It’s good to see that, in today’s liberized politically correct culture, that there are still some real men out there who are willing to stand up for their ladies, and for what’s right.

  • Charlie

Good for you Gene, the street people think they have a right to insult and assault citizens. This sends a message.

    • Glenn

      “Street people” are citizens too.

  • Lee

That’s nothing. At 82, Moses had the ground open up under his enemies’ feet to swallow them whole.

  • victoria

Love the W’hackman! ok one time I gave homeless man change and he looked at it spit and threw on ground! I turned around picked up chg held out a $20 and said oh sorry is this better…He reached out and I pulled back and said FU!!!

have acted as if you had a WMD instead?

    • Keith Hill

Of course Mr. Hackman did the right thing, everyone has a right to protect themselves and family. It’s attitudes like yours that make it hard for law abiding citizens.

  • Beckee Handrich

I had no idea that Mr. Hackman had retired from acting. I remember seeing him in “No Way Out”. He’s always been a professional in movies. I hope he makes a few more movies, however, he’s probably busier in retirement. Way to go Mr. Hackman.

  • TONY

Great job Gene, defending your lady!

  • Jose Cuervo

I’ve had this happen to me a couple of times. Chicago and Atlanta. The panhandlers approach you…angry and in a threatening manor and try to coerce you to give them money…very bad technique if you’re really hungry. Had a guy ask for change walking into a McDonalds down town Cleveland…I said come on in with me..I’ll buy you lunch….he told me to F’off…again..bad technique if you are really hungry.

  • http://yahoo robertdrobert 1944

  • Tony

I was in Santa Fe recently and a lot of the locals were just very rude. My wife and I also had the opportunity to meet a couple of women from there that were very gracious in giving directions and offering to take photos in front of the historic cathedral. It takes all kinds and glad Big Gene decked the jerk.

  • Victoria

I live in albuquerque and visit santa fe with my classroom of students- there are homeless teens and people who sit on park benches and call locals vulgar names – usually in the plaza – they stare you down too. There is a name for them that the community has given them – I forget – but I can ask —-they have no respect and taunt people. Usually if you know you avoid them – it’s sad – Hugh did what was right – they look for lawsuits and fights.

    • victoria

hey there’s two victoris… good post

  • http://yahoo ken

You have to remember he is from the town of big whisky, old Clint would say that’s Gene alright.
