  • “Mama always said life was life a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

This is but one of many iconic quotes from the movie Forrest Gump, which was released over twenty years ago.

The movie swept the 1995 Oscars, snagging the award for Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), and Best Picture among others.

To celebrate its two decade anniversary, Forrest Gump will be given a special Imax re-release.

So much happens in Forrest Gump; there are nearly four decades of history packed into the two and a half hour film.

But at no point does it feel overly long.

With so many memorable scenes and movie lines, it’s hard to select a favorite. Here are a few standout moments from this outstanding film.

    “Run Forrest, Run!”

Childhood bullies are a sad and predictable fact of life. When you’re a child suffering from a major disability, it can be that much more depressing.

What others would consider a harrowing experience, Gump himself considered “a miracle”.

This is probably because he’d been barely able to walk prior to this significant incident.

From that moment on Gump ran practically everywhere. It became something of an important theme throughout the movie.

    “Something Bit Me!”

Of all the things to assume while fleeing for your life as bullets are flying, somehow Forrest Gump’s reaction to being shot “in the buttocks” is to assume something completely asinine.

One of those pesky jungle insects had, in Gump’s mind, picked that exact moment to go in for a bite.

In keeping with Gump’s tendency to be extremely lucky, he falls down in time to avoid being blown to bits.

“I Think I’ll Go Home Now”

As stated before, running is one of the major themes of the Forrest Gump movie. The character stated that one day “for no particular reason”, he just started running.

Gump ran for a period of about three years and two months.

During this lengthy jog, he inspired two well known pop culture phenomenons: the “Shit happens” bumper sticker and the “Have A Nice Day” smiley.

At the end of it all, he amassed a ragtag following of the sort of people always looking for somebody, ANYBODY, to tell them the answers to life rather than think for themselves.

And so it was absolutely hilarious that when Gump finally got tired of running (and in the middle freaking nowhere at that) he stopped turned around and simply said that he was going home.

No great revelation or mystic principles. Nope, not a damn thing.

    Classic.
