Flash SEO Guide

Many webmaster know that Google can read the text in their Flash files.

To get proper search engine optimization for your Flash sites/files, Informit has a six-part guide to designing Flash pages for Google. The main points:

  • You can see Flash content (with excerpts, proving Google is reading) by searching “[query] filetype:swf”, like in this search
  • Macromedia has Flash Search Engine SDK that takes any Flash file and extracts the text, showing you what Google sees in your Flash files.
  • Use more descriptive terms, giving your buttons phrases with keywords, and not just “click here” or “more” or “contact us”.
  • Google typically applies spam penalties to sites with repeating text. Problem is, animated Flash can sometimes repeat text an ungodly number of times, depending on how they are created. Try to find a way to animate that doesn’t create spammy text on extraction.
