Fear in business certainly isn’t restricted to advertising. Sometimes business arrogance ultimately leads to fear after mistakes are made. "If you stick with arrogant stupidity long enough, you start to lose sales, allies – you start to lose success. And things begin to fall apart. Then you get to cowardice."

This is explained more thoroughly in the clip above. Hayden also discusses some interesting innovations in advertising like

Updates to Google’s Webmaster Central tools give webmasters more options for removing content from Google’s index.

The latest tools should make the process faster than the existing URL removal options have been for webmasters.

When people log in to their Webmaster Central consoles, a new tab for URL Removals will be available under the Diagnostics tab.

Vanessa Fox is product manager for Webmaster Central and a global star of WebProNews videos.

She wrote extensively about the new option for URL removals with Webmaster Tools at the product’s blog.

There are four removal options available to webmasters:

Individual URL

A directory or subdirectories on your site

Your entire site

Cached copy of a Google search result

Up to 100 individual URLs can be deleted in a single request.

For directories or subdirectories, the webmaster must block robots from visiting the ones to be deleted in the robots.txt file first to make it eligible for removal.

Vanessa wrote of some caveats to removing an entire site from Google’s index.

Webmasters should be sure this is what they want instead of just switching preferred domains:

Do not use this option to remove the non-preferred version of your site’s URLs from being indexed. For instance, if you want all of your URLs indexed using the www version, don’t use this tool to request removal of the non-www version. Instead, specify the version you want indexed using the Preferred domain tool (and do a 301 redirect to the preferred version, if possible). To use this option, you must block the site using a robots.txt file.

Once removal requests have been submitted, webmasters can check their status in the console.

A Pending status will change to Removed or Denied, the latter happening if the request does not meet removal criteria.

You may have noticed some changes here in the wonderful world of WebProNews yesterday and today. Here’s what we’re doing.

Our publisher, Rich Ord, has been in this Internet business for quite some time. When it’s time to move onward with new technologies, he has done that.

Many of you have seen this in the form of video, first from conferences, then from our cozy studios here in the heart of the Bluegrass. On Monday we began testing the WebProNews video update, an afternoon recap of a handful of stories that are sometimes headline makers, sometimes just below the radar.

We want to inform with our videos, and to entertain. Although we have much affection for CNBC, we don’t want to be them. Our latest videos with host Nicole Eggers may be found on the WebProNews Videos page.

Once conference season begins in earnest, you’ll see that video page fill up with looks from places like Search Engine Strategies. We have enjoyed a positive response from the search and marketing pros who have participated in them so far, and we look forward to many more of them.

Being a writer, I’m someone whose still sees the craft of reporting as one not far removed from the era of fedoras and manual typewriters. But the public wants instant and rich gratification for their news desires. Video isn’t the future, it’s the here and now, no mistake about it.

The modern Internet user also values having a place to leave feedback for those who write today. At the bottom of this article, and others going forward, you will see an invitation to create an account at WebProNews and leave comments.

This is a significant shift for your friendly neighborhood writers here. There may be glitches. There may be weirdness. Sometimes things may not work brilliantly. We’re learning here too. Let us know what you think. Comments, remember?

—

The soon to be acquired, YouTube, has received a request from Viacom to remove videos of some Comedy Central shows.

The source said Viacom, owner of the Comedy Central cable network, had sent a letter last Friday requesting that some of its shows – including the popular “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “The Colbert Report” and those from MTV Networks and BET – be purged from the site.

While some might start questioning the viability of YouTube – if they’ll continue to receive such requests – I tend to look at this as a positive for the company.

A positive, I hear you ask? If you think about it, each time YouTube receives one of these requests, it learns two things:

The videos in question are popular enough that the creators take the time to ask YouTube to remove them.

They know the content is of value to viewers and the creators, so they can turn the request into an opportunity to set-up a formal arrangement.

On the flip-side, the video creators get a free market research tool in YouTube. They get to test what works and what doesn’t, knowing that the moment their content becomes popular, they can contact YouTube and strike up a deal.

YouTube just became the new testing ground for any company’s video campaign!

The college hopes to have a new e-mail system in place by next fall, so the change could take place relatively soon.

Google’s been quite active in the educational community in the past few months. The search engine giant has featured videos from UC Berkeley, sealed a deal with Blackboard, and vastly expanded its Google Books Library Project. The potential arrangement with Georgetown University would fit quite nicely with these recent developments. Also, the search function of the college’s site is already “powered by Google.”

Colleen Nicholson of The Hoya investigated rumors of further Google collaborations. For her article, she interviewed Beth Ann Bergsmark, director of University Information Services. “It’s very interesting but we are in the initial stages of investigation right now,” said Bergsmark.

It seems unlikely that any college would turn down Google’s offering. Nicholson noted that “the new e-mail system is free for schools,” and that, “if implemented, the new Gmail program would increase each student’s mail storage capacity to two gigabytes, or 2,000 megabytes, up from the current GUMail quota of 20 megabytes.”

Some people still have reservations, however. “We have not fully weighed all of the considerations,” said Alexa Kim, executive director of technology services at George Washington University, which is considering a similar switch. “The main concern would be security and privacy,” Kim told Nicholson.

Google tends to earn high marks in those areas, though, so students at both Georgetown University and George Washington University may soon be looking at e-mail systems run by the search engine company.
