The last time cicadas came above ground in the mid-atlantic region, gas was $1.15/gal, Ask Jeeves was released, Jerry Maguire & Independence day were the blockbuster movies of the summer. The insect oddity will be invading towns up and down the east coast as the summer wears on. With millions expected to come above ground to mate, die, then the send their off spring back below ground to eat.

The Science Channel is using this time to build awareness for the insect, and allow people to learn more about the interesting insect. They have a live cam of cicadas in a terrarium, allowing people to see how the insects breed, eat, and live towards the end of their life cycle. While the insects will be invading Washington D.C. with their unique mating sounds, they’re invading this D.C terrarium.

Despite vigorous efforts from competitors to dethrone them, Netflix remains the most popular streaming service out there. This is mighty impressive considering the fact that Netflix’s public image went through the wringer last year – with the price hike, and the incredibly short-lived and short-sided Qwikster idea and all.

In fact, a new report from Consumer Reports found that 81% of their survey respondents said they have used Netflix Instant (streaming service) in the past month. That’s a huge share of the streaming market.

But here’s the thing: Their survey didn’t just look at subscriber figures, but it also considered customer satisfaction. And in that department, Netflix finished far from the top spot.

Out of an overall score of 100, Netflix’s subscriber satisfaction score came in at 69. That put Netflix in sixth place on the list of streaming video providers. Vudu took the top spot with a score of 76. In between those two, in order, fell iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Amazing Prime and Hulu.

Of course, with such a large user base, Netflix is ripe for plenty of bad feedback. While 81% said they stream using Netflix, only 2-14% used the other services mentioned in the survey.

According to Consumer Reports, the biggest problem that was cited by those who scored Netflix low on the satisfaction scale was a lack of quality content. It’s true that Netflix has suffered some pretty significant content losses due to failed deals – Starz comes to mind.

But, Netflix is ramping up the production of original content, which could be a big draw for the service in the future. Between original series like Lilyhammer and upcoming exclusives like the new season of Arrested Development, Netflix could make up for some of the lost studio content with their own shows.

Just don’t expect any sort of content deal with HBO in the near future.

Earlier this week, Netflix released their Q2 earnings report which showed a return to profitability.

[via CNET]

Friday morning, Syrian government blocked live streaming video broadcasted by Bambuser, a startup that has become popular in emerging markets due to it’s ability to be used on 320 different mobile devices, in areas with poor connections. During the Arab Spring protests throughout last year, anti-government activists were able to use the platform to great effect in documenting strife in the region, with a live stream from Homs recently being broadcast on BBC news.

Currently, when a Bambuser user attempts to access a video from Syria, they run into the following screen, where even archived Syrian footage appears to be blocked:

In January, Bambuser was blocked in Egypt to stifle the broadcast mass anti-government demonstrations, and the service has been cut in Bahrain for 6 months. In the past month, Bambuser video from Syria has increased, depicting bombings, government violence towards civilians and footage of decrepit field hospitals. Bambuser Chairman Hans Eriksson is not exactly sure how the Syrian government is blocking broadcasts, but goes on to say “we believe it really shows the true power of live video streaming and the confidence many activists have in our service,” according to Tech Crunch.

Recently, Syria had banned the iPhone, in an attempt to silence protestors, a more obvious device to attempt to block, yet somehow even the Nokia 6600 from 2003 is now on the list as a potential threat to the Syrian regime. It is evident that since Bambuser footage from the region had recently been streaming on CNN, BBC, AlJazeera, SkyNews and others, the government was prompted to shut it down. But Eriksson went on to say, “they (protestors) know the world is watching, sharing and it gives them hope.”

Just when you think your tablet couldn’t get any cooler, AT&T decides to release their U-verse app for tablets to really fluff the cool factor. AT&T announced their new tablet app today saying that it can be used for current (and future) U-verse subscribers. Essentially you can manage your DVR schedule and watch a host of different shows all on your device.

AT&T says there are some neat added features to the new updated app as well, such as the ability to use your tablet as a remote control and accessing photos from your favorite shows. Use your tablet at home and link with your TV and you can receive extra content from all your shows. Use it on-the-go and never forget to DVR your favorite programs again with the full featured DVR app and the fully intuitive remote control feature, reports AT&T.

David Christopher, Chief Marketing Officer for AT&T mobility and he said this about the new technology:

“Today, we are taking our best in class TV experience and taking it to a whole new level by joining two very powerful platforms: your TV and iPad.”

He continued, saying:

“With our new app, AT&T U-verse customers have access to incredible functionality to make the TV experience much richer, from superior search and control functionality, to fresh content that tells you more about what you’re watching, to the ability to share what you’re watching with your friends through social networks. And, when they leave the home, our customers can take the U-verse experience with them.”
