The first wave of Google Glass hardware is complete and shipping off to developers soon. Google has also released the API so those developers can start making apps for it right away. The last piece of the puzze then is the hardware specs.

Google released the tech specs for Glass today, and there are few surprises. We knew that Glass was a pretty sophisticated piece of hardware, but the only real surprises are the generous amount of onboard storage (12GB of usable Flash memory) and the battery life. Here’s the full tech spec sheet:

Fit

Adjustable nosepads and durable frame fits any face.

Extra nosepads in two sizes.

Display

High resolution display is the equivalent of a 25 inch high definition screen from eight feet away.

Camera

Photos – 5 MP

Videos – 720p

Audio

Bone Conduction Transducer

Connectivity

Wifi – 802.11b/g

Bluetooth

Storage

12 GB of usable memory, synced with Google cloud storage. 16 GB Flash total.

Battery

One full day of typical use. Some features, like Hangouts and video recording, are more battery intensive.

Charger

Included Micro USB cable and charger.

While there are thousands of Micro USB chargers out there, Glass is designed and tested with the included charger in mind. Use it and preserve long and prosperous Glass use.

Compatibility

Any Bluetooth-capable phone.

The MyGlass companion app requires Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher. MyGlass enables GPS and SMS messaging.

By the way, Google also published a short Glass FAQ that includes questions like “Is Glass indestructible?” and “Can I use Glass while operating a jackhammer?” The short answer is no, but Google advises caution when uses Glass in combination with any heavy machinery.

Have you ever wondered how Google Glass works? Sure, we all know it’s a wearable computer that displays information on a small glass panel over the eye, but do you really know how it works? Do you know the science behind Glass, and how it works with our eyes?

If you find yourself asking these questions, check out this new infographic from Martin Missfeldt. It explains the science of Glass, as well as the science of our eyes, in an easy to understand way.

What many people may not realize is that Glass doesn’t display information via a screen, but rather projects light directly into the eye. That is how those wearing Glass are able to see the real world with only a small layer of augmented reality content overlapping everything else.

Unfortunately, the effect is lessened for those wearing glasses as lenses dissipate light, including the light projected from Glass. I guess that’s what futuristic contact lenses and brain interfaces are for.

Aside from the folks at Google and a few lucky developers, none of us have had the chance to wear Glass yet. We, the consumers, still don’t know how Glass is going to impact our lives, but a recent video …

Aside from the folks at Google and a few lucky developers, none of us have had the chance to wear Glass yet. We, the consumers, still don’t know how Glass is going to impact our lives, but a recent video from Google gives us a small idea.

In a new video simply titled, “How It Feels [through Glass],” Google shares a point of view walkthrough of how Glass will work in everyday scenarios. Check it out:

Now, I don’t think all of us will be doing anything quite as extreme as skydiving or performing barrel rolls in an air plane. What it illustrates, however, is how Glass will greatly impact sharing of information from one person to the next. A pilot can wear Glass, take off in a plane, and then have students watching a live feed from Glass on the ground. They get first hand experience in piloting a plane without having to be on board the vehicle.

Of course, Google’s views on how people will use Glass are a bit optimistic. We all know that the majority of Glass users will be using the technology to share inane statuses and irreverent jokes.
