“Fast Times At Ridgemont High” may not mean much to today’s generation; although it was a seminal coming-of-age story in the early ’80s–and the film that spawned a nation’s love affair with Pheobe Cates–the brilliance of it has gotten a bit lost in the translation of technology and a generational fixation on social media. But at the heart of the film lies several truths that we can all agree on and identify with. Such is the brilliance of writer Cameron Crowe.

It’s been at the forefront of a lot of minds recently because of the resemblance a certain Russian Olympic high-jumper bears to Sean Penn’s stoner/surf goon character Jeff Spicoli, and if that’s what it takes to get today’s youth to watch this classic, I’ll take it. Fast Times dealt with sex, love, heartbreak, high-school politics, drugs, student-teacher relationships (and not the naughty kind, but rather, how most students feel about strict professors), and working at a dead-end fast food job. This is Fast Times.

Why You Should Watch:

1. Sean Penn as a stoner.

2. This.

3. Nicolas Cage, in a paper hat.

4. Damone.

5. Eric Stoltz, Anthony Edwards as young’uns.

“You’re not a bad guy, Damone. You’re just lewd, crude, and obnoxious.”
    “I can live with that.”

  • Jeff Spicoli

    Car Crash scene:

Charles Jefferson’s brother: Hes gonna kill us!
Jeff Spicoli:Make up your mind dude is going to shit or kill us.
Jefferson’s brother:First hes going to shit then kill us!

I had a buddy in high school back in the 70s who was so much like Sean Penn’s character. Cracks me up every time I see a reference to that movie.

I can’t even remember how many times I read and re-read Cameron Crowe’s book upon which the movie was based. The movie was great, of course, though not as good as the book (which is usually a foregone conclusion, anyway). The person that Cates played in the movie was much more tragic in the book (and hence in real-life since the book was a names-changed-to-protect-the-innocent non-fiction piece into the lives of America’s average teens at the time) and they never delve into that in the movie, though it’s implied, I suppose, based on how “worldly wise” Cates’ Linda is.

It’s fair to say Cates didn’t have a really huge career after “Fast Times…” – goes to show it doesn’t necessarily pay to show off your boobs for the camera. Still, she has probably fueled more male fantasies than Jenna Jameson, which I am not sure is a good thing.

Regardless, always a great movie and still great fun. Certainly a product of its time, but it still holds up.
