In the spirit of the holiday season, and holiday embarrassment that might come along with it, Facebook is reminding users that they have some privacy settings they can use and potentially save their reputations, or perhaps even their jobs.

"Now that the holidays are in full swing, complete with office bashes, ugly sweater parties and New Years soirees, we thought we would take a minute to explain in more detail how you can control access to the content you post on Facebook," says Sasha Rosse on the Facebook Blog.

"When you post a photo album or video to your profile, you have the ability to decide exactly who can see it," explains Rosse. "You can restrict access to certain networks, your friends and their friends or just your friends. If you’re looking for even more granularity, you can choose the "customize" option and use friend lists to make the content available only to a subset of your friends. For example, if you don’t want your co-workers to see that embarrassing photo of you wearing your grandmother’s favorite holiday sweater, create a friend list for family members and make the photo available only to people on that list."

They also have the courtesy to remind users that they can control who sees certain elements of their profiles, by going to the privacy settings page. You can even type a specific friend’s name into the  search box and view your profile through their eyes – meaning, you get to see what it looks like to them with your current privacy settings in tact.

This is not much of an issue for me, as most of my most embarrassing moments happen in the company of my co-workers anyway, or are instigated by them as you will see in an upcoming Holiday video from WebProNews in which I was encouraged to sing. Thanks Mike!

But for the rest of you Facebook users worried about you reputations (as you should be), remember, Facebook has your back on this one. Most other social networks have privacy settings as well.
