On Saturday, Europe’s most powerful rocket, the Ariane-5 ECA, launched from its base in Kourou, French Guiana, which is located in South America.

The rocket is carrying a payload of satellites from different countries, including one from the ESA. A United State-Spanish orbital vehicle is also on board the Ariane. The craft successfully unloaded it’s cargo into space 31 minutes after lift-off, according to ABC News.

The 780-ton Ariane-5 ECA can lob a 10-ton payload into space, meaning it can carry larger satellites two at a time, assuring competitiveness in the multibillion dollar satellite launching market.

French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin hailed the successful launch as “the mark of a winning Europe.”

The mission marked success for a project that has dealt with difficulties, including a maiden voyage which ended with an Ariane rocket being destroyed.
