More than 70 percent of workers say that email is the most productive communication tool according to a survey from IT consulting firm Dimension Data Holdings.

After email 53 percent of workers said the telephone was the most productive communication tool followed by 52 percent who favored mobile phones.

One hundred percent of those surveyed said they used email, 80 percent use the telephone and 76 percent prefer mobile phones.

Other communications tools used include instant messaging with 66 percent of workers using that form of communication.

When it comes to security risks respondents said that unified communications application was the most likely to pose a threat, along with PDAs and mobile phones.

Dimension Data says that IT managers and workers should be aware of the security risks surrounding those applications.

Fifty-two percent of users said they believed that unified communications were as secure as other communication tools, but only 31 percent of IT mangers said those technologies were secure.

Sixteen percent of IT managers thought the technology to be fairly risky, and nearly 10 percent believed instant messaging to be very risky.

"This result indicates that IT managers are aware of the new risk types that are associated with unified communications, while IT users are probably reasonably unaware of the risks they might be exposed to and expose their organizations to when using communications technologies other than e-mail," the report said.
