The online auction firm will put $5,000 up for grabs for individual developers in the eBay Developers Challenge; a developer team of up to four people could win matching Xbox 360 consoles.

Both the individual and team winners in the Challenge will get trips to the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego next March.

Greg Isaacs, director, eBay Developers Program, passed along the invitation to the contest. eBay hopes to see tools developed that can help its buyers and affiliates. The company suggested developing applications from three areas:

1. Category/vertical search (re-mix eBay to help people find things more efficiently)

2. Web mash-up (re-mix eBay with another Web service)

3. Multi-platform (integrate eBay with Skype, PayPal, Outlook, GNOME, TiVo, etc.) applications

An Ajax developer could take on a drag-and-drop UI project to help users customize their eBay search results, in one example, while another possible application could be one that searches across multiple shopping sites.

Rules apply, of course; more details available at the Challenge site.
