  • The Daytime Emmys took place last Saturday, with long-running soap “General Hospital” taking home a quite a few statuettes in a number of different categories. The show, which began its run in 1963, has enjoyed 49 seasons to the tune of 12,590 episodes as of June 22nd. In an era when soaps are shuttering left and right, the program is apparently still holding strong. If its recent wins are any indication, this hospital may have some life in it for many years to come.

Of course, “General Hospital” wasn’t the only daytime drama that brought home some awards last weekend. Heather Tom of “The Bold and the Beautiful” fame took home the trophy for lead actress in a drama series, while the scribes working behind-the-scenes at “Days Of Our Lives” snagged the award for best writing team.

Not surprisingly, “Jeopardy!” brought home the statuette for best game show, though former E! correspondent Todd Newton won best host for his duties over at “Family Game Night”. “Live with Regis and Kelly”, meanwhile, won a pair of awards for best entertainment talk show and best talk show host. Unfortunate, Regis Philbin, who recently retired from the program, wasn’t in attendance to accept the honor.

Despite some of the problems the show is currently facing — rumors are swirling that NBC is anxious to replace Ann Curry with another host — “TODAY” was recognized as the best morning program. That’s got to make her feel somewhat better.
