Networking online doesn’t have to be all about flash-in-the-pan bands and website designs that make you wish the designer had some clue about complementary colors. Michele DiLorenzo has her head in the clouds when it comes to building out culturecloud, her social media concept site.

Michele DiLorenzo founded culturecloud (she’s going with a lower case spelling, a la e.e. cummings), she said in our phone interview, to better reflect how people tend to congregate in life: by interests, not by mechanized profile building.

“The existing friends model turns off adults,” she said of the MySpaces of the world. DiLorenzo wants culturecloud to be more like real life, and connect people with similar interest. “People don’t want to be siloed.”

There’s an element of serendipity that DiLorenzo wants to tap, when it comes to people and relationships. Searching for topics on culturecloud should result in items that reflect related interests. The scope of a search should be similar to the way the human mind makes connections.

Heady stuff, we might think. Write about a topic and tag it, and the post becomes part of a person’s ‘mini-cloud’ of interests. As they write more, the mini-cloud becomes more reflective of the personality of the writer.
