Mad Men star Christina Hendricks has spent her time on the show playing fictional mother Joan Harris. However, she recently revealed that she has no interest in being a mother in real life.
Hendricks has been married to Body of Proof actor Geoffrey Arend since 2009, and during a recent interview with Health Magazine, she explained that they have decided that they do not want any children.
"We got a puppy, and that's my idea of starting a family," she said. "People say, 'Oh, that's practice for parenting', but if it's practice for anything it's to be a mum to another puppy. We've decided that we are not really interested in having children. It seems like it's expected that you'd want to have kids."
Hendricks said that people seem to think that she will change her mind later in life. However, she says that there may be a very small chance that she could change her mind, but as of now there are no children in her future. "It's just very normal for people to say, 'Well, when you guys have kids…' And then when I say, 'Actually I don't think we're going to do that,' people will say, 'Oh, you say that now…'" Hendricks explained. "It doesn't bother me, though. And, you know, there's a small chance I could change my mind."
Hendricks admitted that she has never been the kind of person to have a five-year plan. She goes with the flow, and added that she never thought she would be a professional actress either. "I've never been that person who had a plan like, 'In five years, I'm going to do this'. Things have shifted in ways that I would never have imagined," she said. "I never anticipated being a professional actor. I just assumed it would be in community theatre - like after my job, I would go to rehearsal and be in a play."
Mad Men is not Hendricks' only endeavor. She is currently scheduled to appear in the upcoming films How to Catch a Monster and A Book of Common Prayer.
